The news going around in Pakistani circles is the fact that one of our own is the one of the Convening Lead Authors for the IPCC team that shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore. And of course, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change) team is chaired by another South Asian; Rajendra Pachauri.

Pakistani scientist in Nobel team -DAWN – National; October 14, 2007: WASHINGTON, Oct 13: Pakistani professor Adil Najam, now teaching at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, US, is amongst the team of scientists and experts in the Intergovernmental …

Over the years, I have come to know Dr. Najam rather well, and have learned from and been inspired by him. I’ve written about him quite a few times at my blog. For Example: here and especially here.

From a comment Dr. Najam posted on Pakistaniat.com:

"AdilThank you to all for their kind wishes and congrats. I should add, however, that the Nobel was awarded to the work of the IPCC (a panel of eminent global climate change experts), so I am just one of the many experts on that Panel. I have served on the IPCC for some 8 years, the last many as a Convening Lead Author. So, yes, it does feel terrific to have one’s work and research celebrated by the Nobel Committee, but it really is an honor shared by many (including by Dr. Tariq Banuri who played a leading role in the IPCC’s evolution in the past).

Some links: Dawn, Boston Globe, Encyclopedia of the Earth, The Fletcher School.

In the idiom of South Asian sport, I want to say:

"Well played, Adil bhai; buhat aala, Adil bhai!"

Note: This post is a tribute from iFaqeer, Owais Mughal and many other friends. It is being produced here inspite of Adil’s objection. We would’ve kept quiet but our situation is now what Dagh Dehlvi had once said:

Dagh ki shaamat jo aai iztaraab-e-shauq meiN
hal-e-dil kam-bakht ne sab un ke muNh par rakh dia

So while we’ve taken this action of writing our ‘haal-e-dil’, we hope our readers will give Adil due credit for his research work in their comments below.

good to hear that a pakistani is being acknowleged for his contribution to the global cause i.e Global warming.

But isnt it strange that Mr. Algore (winner of nobel peace prize for his efforts to curb global warming) who has been a part of government in clinton era and has been in the politics for long couldnt make the US to sign KYOTO PROTOCOL.

    read here abt protocol,
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Protocol

its absurd that the West especially US blames China for contributing to co2 emmisions while they themselves are the major contributors.

    from the link,
Let us not forget that the average Chinese emits just 3.5 tonnes of CO2 per year, whereas Britons emit nearly 10 tonnes and Americans 20 tonnes.

Well done indeed Adil. You’ve done us proud. I was a few years your junior from ICB so I’m doubly proud that a Pakistani from ICB has reached such heights.

From school days I remember Adil as a fiery debator and an all round swell guy.He wouldn’t know me, but he was one of those chaps that more or less the entire school knew.

Well done indeed, Sir ! Bravo !!

    Adil-
I have been following the IPCC since its inception and feel great pride and joy in it getting awarded with the Nobel Prize. Mario is also, I am sure, a happy man today.
Continue on with the wonderful job you are doing. Kudos to the IPCC authors who spend countless (and thankless) hours preparing their drafts and then negotiating the language.
I can’t believe we were discussing on a panel just a few weeks ago that the great thing about MIT alums is that they do not believe in artificial boundaries and limits. You truly prove that to be the case.
While IPCC has been awarded the prize, I am sure you and I agree that the real prize is still years ahead of us. Lots to do and lots of hurdles to cross before we can really call it a victory.

I have enjoyed Adil’s company at UET being a hostel mate for 5 years. I must say that he had an exceptional talent all along. While we would be occupying his room waiting for tea and playing cards he would be passionately hitting the keys of his typewriter (remember no laptops or pc back in 84-89) trying to finish his artilce for “Muslim”.

We used to jokingly tell Adil “you will be a WADDA ADMI one day” and now he is.

Well done Adil, keep up the good work. We are all proud of your achievements for Pakistan.

Congratulations – this is absolutely fantastic news that amongst hundred of authors, one of the contributor is our own Prof Adil Najam (Chapter 12: Sustainable Development and Mitigation).

It is our aspiration and dua’ that these efforts be reoriented and directed towards Third World development (rather crisis) and away from the elite orientation of science.

I want to point out that it’s a bit of a shame that very few Pakistanis seem to be aware of this news. I appreciate the quiet dignity with which Adil is receiving the honour, but it bothers me that newspapers, esp Pakistani ones, haven’t created much hullabaloo (have they?). I think at times like these, such news can go a long way in lifting our spirits as a people.

I am so glad that IPCC and Al Gore are conferred with Nobel Prize. We that know Tariq Banuri and Adil Najam have been playing an active and effective contribution to move forward the IPCC process and both are highly regarded as scholastic icons at global level on trade and sustainable development. It was of course the courage, commitment and conviction of IPCC team that ‘global warming’, ‘climate change’ and ‘environment’ have become a buzz words in the world.
We need to appreciate IPCC efforts to preserve this precious planet from pollution. Though its the beginning of the effort and is a long way to go.

I came across ATP just recently and have been very impressed with not just the original posts but also the comments that follow. I had no idea I had stumbled upon such esteemed company.

Wasn’t it Prof. Najam who was trying to get Abdul Sattar Edhi nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize? I haven’t been able to find any updates on that effort. Obviously Edhi sahib didn’t win this time, but wouldn’t Adil bhai’s endeavor carry a little more weight next time?

p.s. You can be formal only for so long on something called pakistaniat.com.

Dear Adil Bhai. Fisrt congratulations on this amazing achievements. I have known of you since you used to do programs on PTV. AT that time my mother used to always say “tum iss ki tarha kay kuo nahi hotay?” (Why aren’t you more like him?). But even then we were proud of you because you were always so respectful and so confident and so akalmand. Since then I have been hearing of your many acheivements from different people and always amazed at just how much you have done in so many different areas. So, congratulations and thank you for making us feel good and feel proud. We look for even more great achievements from you.

    October 16th, 2007 12:13 am

Adil, one of the reasons we/I felt an acknowledgement was necessary here was precisely to bring the work of the IPCC and the cause it stands for home to us Pakistanis. Your work and involvement with the panel gives us all a chance to feel part of a global cause and a global effort. It helps us shake off the depressive funk we often feel as a nation. Despite our own protestations to the contrary, we often sound like we’re a “useless” community that doesn’t matter much in the global scheme. This kind of thing reminds us that if we step up, get engaged, and play our part, we can contribute to the global scene. It inspires us all to do that.

And that is what we celebrate.

So thank you for doing all you do. And for carrying the spirit of “Pakistaniat” at that level; too often, people who are active and engaged at a global level are not engaged with their own communities or in touch with their roots. The fact that you are the very founder of a forum like this makes this kind of thing all the more sweet.

  42. Riaz Hussain says:
    October 16th, 2007 12:42 am

Adil Bhai, read your comment above. Very gentlemanly. But, with due respect, I understand that humility is a very Pakistani quality and a good thing, but sometimes basking in deserved glory is also good. You deserve the praise so accept it. Whenever any other Pakistani sings well, or dances in a US show, or plays good tennis, you go and sing their praises. Now its own time to sing yours. You have worked hard, the world’s biggest award has recognized your work, now is the time to bask in glory. I am sure it was a team effort, but janab you were in the dream team of the worlds top scientists and you helped make this possible.

Asli Pakistani to chooti si cheez ko barra bana daitay hain, aap itni barri cheez ko choota kar rahain hain!

After your comment I did some digging on Google and found some quotes from the IPCC Chairman. For example: “The Nobel Prize Committee has acknowledged the work that the IPCC has done. Let me clarify, as chairman, that all the scientists who have contributed to the work of the IPCC are the Nobel laureates who have been recognised and applauded by the Nobel Prize committee” (http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=39636).

On Berkeley website, I found an annoucemengt about some of the others on the IPCC panel, it quoted a letter from the IPCC Chairman to the authors of this year’s report and said: “I have been stunned in a pleasant way with the news of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for the IPCC. This makes each of you a Nobel Laureate and it is my privilege to acknowledge this honour on your behalf…. The fact that the IPCC has earned the recognition that this award embodies, is really a tribute to your knowledge, hard work and application.” (http://www.lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/Nobel-Peace-Prize-2007.html)

So yes it is a team effort but it is your important contribution to a team of researchers who get the world’s most prestigious prize that we are celebrating. We are all very very proud of your acheivement and agree with the IPCC Chairman that this is a tribute to your knowledge, hard work and application.

Adil, you have done us all proud. And I agree with iFaqeer’s view on why this entry was necessary. There may be a lot of things that we can be proud of, and you make a commendable effort to bring all those things to the forefront but there are very few people, specially those in the limelight, that can inspire this nation.

You were one of those people before your work was acknowledged by the Nobel committee, but becoming a Nobel laureate gives us so much more reason to try and play our part in making this world and our nation a better place.

Like most Pakistanis who have heard about this great honour I am also immensly proud of a Pakistani doing well in intellectual and academic work. Adil Najam symbolizes many bright Pakistanis in all fields doing great work that the whole world reconizes. But I am also sad that the rest of word recognizes this work and Adil Najam but most Pakistanis do not.The media and the government seem more interested in being entertained by Sheikh Rashid than learning from people like Najam. Sad.

    Amazing

Saw Dr. Adil Najam on Geo Tv this week running the elections transmission and was impressed by his knowledge and polite but firm questions. So I looked around for more and him, but did not expect this. This is a REAL scholar. Proud of you Sir.
