With the PPP leadership having endorsed him and his nomination papers having been accepted, unless something dramatic happens – and in Pakistan, it always can – Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani will soon be elected as the next Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Whether Mr. Gillani will become the person to harken meaningful democratic change in the country or yet another in a string of powerless Presidents and Prime Ministers who held ceremonial office while others wielded real power remains to be seen. But right now, today is his day. We wish him well and wish that he will make it memorable and prove our inherent cynicism wrong.

For someone who has been in politics as long as he has it is rather amazing that so many know so little about him. The question that one keeps being asked is not “how he will do?” but “who is he?” (You may not have recognized him 2 days ago, but after the dose of portraits above, this should be a face you won’t soon forget!).

Of course, the second question impacts the first. So, here is a complilation of interesting facts about Syed Yusuf eza Gillani’s profile. These have been compiled from a variety of sources, including the BBC, Dawn, and Daily Times.

  • Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani was born on 9 June 1952 in Karachi but his family hails from the Punjab. The Gillanis are among the most prominent of landowners and spiritual leaders in the south of the province. Their home town is the ancient Punjabi city of Multan.
  • Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani is a member of an influential political family of Multan, started his political career in 1978 after the death of father Makhdoom Alamdar Hussain Gilani, who was a signatory to the Pakistan Resolution. Mr Gilani’s grandfather, Makhdoom Ghulam Mustafa Shah Gilani, and paternal uncle Makhdoom Raza Shah Gilani had been elected members of the legislative assembly after defeating the Unionists in the 1946 elections. Mr Gilani’s great grandfather, Makhdoom Raja Bakhsh Gilani, was both mayor of Multan in 1921 and member of the Central Legislative Assembly of India. He served as a member of the assembly from 1921 till his death in 1936 and was known as the father of the Indian Assembly.
  • His larger family has always played a key role in Pakistan politics. His great grandfather Syed Sadruddin Shah’s brother Syed Rajan Bux Shah was the first Gillani to be elected to Indian Legislative Council in 1921. He remained its member till his death in 1936. Gillanis joined the All India Muslim League in 1940s. Rajan’s nephew Syed Mohammad Raza Shah defeated Unionist party candidate and PPP’s another contender for premiership Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s grandfather Makhdum Murid Hussain Qureshi in 1946 elections. Raza Shah was the only non-official president of the Multan District Board before Partition, defeating British Depty Commissioner EP Moon in the elections. He was brother of Yousaf Raza’s grandfather Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah. Raza’s son Hamid Raza Gillani won National Assembly seats in 1962, 1965, 1977 and 1985. He served as parliamentary secretary in 1960s and as a federal miniuster in Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s 1977 cabinet. He was elected to Senate of Pakistan in 1991. Mustafa Shah’s son and Yousaf’s father Makhdum Alamdar Gillani was elected to Punjab Assembly in 1951 alongwith his brother Syed Walayat Hussain Shah. Alamdar Gillani was elevated to provincial health minister in 1953. He joined newly born Republican Party in 1956 and was disqualified by Ayub government from electoral politics. His brother and Yousaf’s uncle Rehmat Shah filled the vaccum by joining Ayub’s Conventional Muslim League and winning a provincial seat along with Hamid Raza who kept on leading the family on the electoral scene till the time Yousaf ousted him in 1990. Another cousin of Yousaf Raza Gillani, Syed Tanvirul Hasan Gillani, also won a national seat in 1990 but from the platform of Islami Jamhuri Ittehad (IJI).
  • Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani holds an MA in journalism at the University of the Punjab. He also studied at the Forman Christain (FC) College in Lahore and at La Salle High School at Multan.
  • Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani is a tall, softly-spoken man with an air of authority, supporters say he is known for doing the right thing.
  • Mr Gilani was the first elected chairman of the District Council, Multan. He defeated the local government minister Syed Fakhar Imam, some 25 years ago. In 1988 elections, he defeated the then Punjab chief minister Nawaz Sharif on PPP ticket. In 1990, again on a PPP ticket, he was elected an MNA after defeating Makhdoom Hamid Raza Gilani, a former federal minister. In 1993, he defeated Malik Sikander Hayat Bosan and later became Speaker of the National Assembly. Mr Gilani contested the election in 1997 on a PPP ticket and lost the party did not win a single seat in Punjab. He could not contest elections in 2002. In 2008 he defeated PML-Q’s Sikander Hayat Bosan.
  • Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani’s first term as a public servant was as a nominee of General Zia-ul-Haq. This means that he was not part of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s original PPP team. Mr Gillani was elected as the chairman of the Multan union council in 1983. Two years later he was elected to the federal parliamentand made Minister of Housing and Railways. It was during this stint that circumstances arose which led to his leaving the League. While serving as a minister he fell out with then Prime Minister Mohammad Ali Junejo. This led to him being replaced as minister and sidelined in the party.
  • Yousuf Raza Gillani served as the Speaker of Pakistan National Assembly between 1993-96.
  • In 1995, Mr Gillani issued instructions for the release of parliamentarians detained by his own PPP government. When the interior ministry refused to oblige, he had the matter brought on record – a quite unprecedented action.
  • Yousuf Raza Gillani refused to join the renegade PPP enticed by the Musharraf regime. Because he refused to do a deal with Gen. Musharraf his loyalty is much admired within his party.
  • He was sent to jail by Gen. Musharraf in 2001, serving five years following a conviction over illegal government appointments. After being sentences by the Musharraf regime in 2001 he told reporters that the charges were “concocted and were fabricated to pressurise him to leave the PPP… Since I am unable to oblige them, they decided to convict me so that I could be disqualified and an example set for other political leaders who may learn to behave as good boys.” Reportedly, his stance and defiance won him many admirers, even among the government. He was finally released on 7 October 2006 from Adiala Jail, after spending more than five years in prison.
  • Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani spent six years in jail and could not contest the 2002 elections. While in jail wrote a book Chah-e-Yusuf ki Sada (Reflections from Yusuf’s Well) while in jail. In the book he describes his decision to leave the Muslim League and join the PPP: “I was furious, and helpless at the same time, I knew I could not continue… and then I made up my mind.”Bhutto loyalist. Mr Gillani says he went to Karachi to meet Benazir Bhutto, Zulfiqar Bhutto’s daughter, then very much in the political wilderness. Mr Gillani says he presented his offer to immediately join the PPP. “Ms Bhutto said to me, ‘There is nothing I can offer you, why have you come?’” Mr Gillani said his reply was what sealed his relationship with the PPP and the Bhuttos. “I said to her, there are three types of people in this world. “Lovers of honour, of wisdom and of wealth. I am of the first type, and that is all I want.” Soon afterward, General Zia dismissed Mr Junejo’s government. Mr Gillani then joined the PPP, months before the general’s death bought an end to its political exile.
  • Yousuf Raza Gilani has four sons and a daughter.
  • He is also related to Pir Pagara, the head of PML-Functional. Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani is a descendent of Moosa Pak Shaheed, a great saint of Multan, Yousaf’s mother was a sister of Makhdum Hasan Mahmood of Jamaldinwali, Rahimyar Khan. Makhdum Hasan’s other sister was married to Pir of Pagaro. Yousaf’s first maternal cousin Makhdum Ahmad Mahmood is provincial president of Pir Pagara’s Functional League. Ahmad Mahmood’s sister is married to General Musharraf’s former loyalist Jehangir Tareen.
  • Makhdoom Syed Abdul Qadir Gillani, Yousaf Raza Gillani’s eledest son, will marry the grand-daughter of Pir Pagara on March 24, 2008 in Karachi. The same day that he is likely to be elected Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Very impressive career. Good wishes to him. May he be able to stand to pressures in the future like he has in the past.

    Adil-
An impressive list of who he knows, who he is fathered by, and who his family is married into…Reminded me of biographies I used to read in my Pakistan Studies books about All India Muslim League leaders.
….but I am surprised you did not list any achievement on behalf of the nation by a political leader who has been in major positions for much of his adult life? I have been struck by the same even in biographies put together by national newspapers.

Bilal, your comments seems a little unfair on Gillani. I think standing as Speaker for the rights of the rights of the MNAs against his own party leader IS an achievement on behalf of the nation. So is standing up to a dictator and refusing to bow like so many other did to the extent of spending 5 years in jail. That IS something on behalf of the nation. Unfortunately too many others did not have the same courage of their convictions.
I am myself not fully sold on him because I fear he may become a rubber stamp for Zardari. But I am willing to give him a chance. Maybe sometimes we become a little too cynical!

  4. March 24th, 2008 1:58 am

    Jabbar:
My point is not to complain that Gilani has no merits. It is only to highlight that we, as a nation, are enamored by lineage – and nobody is talking about his contributions. For the sake of democracy, if nothing else, it would be nice to know a bit more about his contributions that make him a good prime-minister to be the executive running day to day affairs of the country.

  5. March 24th, 2008 2:00 am

I hear he is a ladies Man and normally ladies donot make mistakes about the men they like from their heart. He must be a good man and i hope and wish Pakistan is entering a realy NEW ERA OF PEACE AND PROSPERITY.

The real question today will be how many votes he gets. If he gets as many votes as the Speaker did, then Musharraf is in real trouble. Because that would mean that this coalition he is leading has real power and can bring about real change. Whether they can all agree on what change they want is another matter.

Bilal … I agree with you about the way we are entangled in as a nation (or even as a region: Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka have similar examples though descending from saints and prophets probably plays less of a part there). This is what takes us all directly to developing ‘personality cults’, I guess. When I wrote on him at http://tinyurl.com/2s887q I, too, was hoping that his prsonal strengths, abilities and views on issues – rather than mere genealogical background – would be highlighted.

Anyway, cynicism and sarcasm aside, let’s hope we have a REAL Prime Minister in him.

I am not impressed either with his political or spiritual genealogy.

Even though a handsome man, he is not charismatic. He sounds wooden when he speaks — somewhat like Al Gore when he was campaigning. But there 2 or 3 things that go in his favor (Gillani’s, not Al Gore’s):

    1. He did not ditch his party and, instead, preferred to go to jail on trumped up charges. He could have easily become a minister in Musharraf’s cabinet by ditching his party like the Patriots, but he didn’t. That shows character.

    2. While in jail he wrote a book with a meaningful title. I haven’t read the book but the very fact that he wrote a book shows the man is capable of thinking and putting his thoughts on paper. (We can’t say that about many of our politicians.)

    3. When different names of likely candidates for prime minister’s position were mentioned in the media, Gillani kept a low profile and didn’t make a fool of himself like Amin Fahim and Ahmed Mukhtar with their childish claims to the job on TV.

Good luck to him in his new job.

Any person who supports and is subservient to people like Benazir Bhutto and Asif Zardari, who have (directly and indirectly) looted the starving people of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, has no respect in my eyes, EVEN IF he is a saint himself.

Yet another scion of an old entrenched ‘landlord-pir’ family of Multan to become prime minister of this unfortunate country. When will Pakistan get out of the stranglehold of these landlords? Reading synopsis of the ‘Gillanis of Multan’ it is very clear that no matter which party wins the elections, there will be a ‘Gillani’ or his close relative in the government of Pakistan. By intermarrying their powerful kins and simultaneously joining various political parties, and at the same time securing positions for lesser family members in the civil and military forces and building industrial complexes, these ‘landlord-pir’ clans have for ever guaranteed their control of power in Pakistan. And Adil Sahab what did Faiz say: ‘Hum Dekhain Gay……..’.

    ‘Dekhain Gay’ what, sir?

  11. faraz Waseem says:

I think real war has begun; between high rank army officials and “landlord-pirs” group.

Why land-reforms are not an issue pakistan politics. This is what differentiates us from India.

  12. Roshan says:
    March 24th, 2008 10:03 am

    Just to add few things:
Gillani and Qureshi families in Multan had been political opponents for centuries. It is Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Yousaf Raza Gillani who neutralized this political rivalry by joining PPP.
The element of resistance against establishment in Gillani family goes back to Moughal era when Gillani, a governor of Multan, supported Dara Shikoh rather than radical Emperor Aurangzeb.
During Yousaf Raza’s speakership, the PPP leadership was unhappy with him as he was a speaker of National Assembly rather than PPP. He ordered the production orders for Sheikh Rasheed in the session while he was imprisoned in Bahawalpur jail.
On a family note, he was blessed with triplets (sons) after the one who is getting married today.

  13. Kareem says:

I think this whole “feudal” argument is the argument of the URBAN feudals of Pakistan. If you really look at who has ruled Pakistan (and messed it up) it is really her urban feudals and technocrats who have no democratic legitimacy and use these arguments to delegitimize those who can get votes Actually, the so-called Feudals have done very little to hurt Pakistan, they in fact helped create it. Our educated elites, on the other hand, have been the real corrupt power-grabbers from teh very beginning and it has always been teh civil-military bureaucracy that has been against democracy in Pakistan.

  14. Pervaiz Munir Alvi says:
    March 24th, 2008 11:05 am

“The element of resistance against establishment in Gillani family”

What are you talking about Malik Sahab. These ‘landlord-pirs’ along with military generals ARE the ‘Establishment’. Army men, Captain above, are very often ‘son-in-law’ of the ‘landlord-industrialist’ families. Did our future prime minister not ‘serve’ under another general whose picture we are destined to see here at ATP every time we log in? Did ‘syed’ Yousaf Raza Gillani fall out with the general in the eighties and join daughter of an other landlord on bases of any noble principels or it was just another case of political expedience. Come on Malik Sahab. Each time winner is the same horse painted in different color.

Actually, Pervaiz Sahib, the real karta dharta of the establishment is the beureucrat and the so called parha likha Pakistani who has never had faith in the ordinary Pakistanis and therefore keeps egging the military with this nonsense that democracy is not for Pakistan.

The arrogance of the educated Pakistani is amazing. As if the voter knows nothing and we do. The people voted for a party, that party chose him. If you do not like him or his kind, make a party, run in the elections and if you win, we will accept what someone above calls your urban feudals too. You don’t have to like the people’s choice. But you have to respect it. I will take an elected anyone anytime over a wardi-zadda dictator or a second-rate bank cashier.

  17. faraz Waseem says:

    Kareen you are unfortunately right.

” Actually, the so-called Feudals have done very little to hurt Pakistan, they in fact helped create it. ”

These all opportunist feudals join muslim league boat when they saw creation of Pakistan is eminent.

Why we have a feudal system in 21st century? There is nothing stop is someone from infleuntial background wins election but why we can not reform this feudal system like India has done in 1948.

  18. faraz Waseem says:
    March 24th, 2008 12:01 pm

Instead of “one-man” rule, we will be run by aristocracy of “landlord-pirs”. Although it is little better then one man rule, this is far away from a real democracy and rule of law.

We have to see what this parliment will do for rule of law and free media.

    PMA Sahib,
I respect and agree with your point of view that pirs, landlords and industrialists are facilitators of establishment’s anti people decisions.
On the other hand we need to sort out who among those have courage to say NO when it is in the larger interests of public or institutions. Yes he was a cabinet member in 1985 assembly. But let us appreciate that he joined Junejo rather than Zia ul Haq and was removed from ministry.
He even defied Benazir Bhutto when she asked him to disqualify Jam Mashooq Ali from his parliament membership. Even agencies tried to create rift between him and BB when he was wrongly accused of hatching conspiracy with Nawaz Sharif to become PM by ousting BB.
Then he was punished by NAB for illegal appointments in NA and was put behind the bars for more than four years. He rejected all those lucrative offers given to him by establishment at that time. Wasim Sajjad made similar ILLEGAL appointments in Senate but he as an ally of establishment was conferred as the leader of the house in the same house.
Hamid Mir had a nice article in yesterday’s The News in which he says that hopefully Yousaf Raza would not be a transitional PM like Ch. Shujaat and YES man like Shaukat Aziz.
BTW, i personally was in favor of Amin Fahim because of his services and commitment with the party are far larger than Yousaf Raza.
Finally to let you know that Yousaf Raza unlike many pirs is neither very rich nor have big land holdings to be categorized as a feudal lord. Even it would be hard for him to afford the level of security which former PM like NS, Shujat and even former first man Zardari is maintaining.

I am quite happy to see the democratic revolution taking place in Pakistan today.

The Judges are free and the speeches in the parliament, specially the ferocious comments from Ch Nisar, indicate a breath of fresh air and freedom setting in the Islamabad environs.

The people of pakistan are smiling at this moment. This is a short moment of hope, hapiness and freedom. There are tons of problems ahead but lets celebrate what we have today. A free judiciary, a real Prime Minister and an Army chief who is smart enough to pick up the public sentiments and prefers to stick to his job.

I feel a bit bad about Gen Musharraf but then all along last year he had lots of chances to do the right things and he made the worst of the choices.

Pakistan has moved on and my congrats to all.

Asif: Actually I am with you. In a democracy people must be supreme. The problem is not with the people. The problem is with our socio-economic system. Election after election the same ‘class’ is returned to the assemblies. Wonder why? In a system where a poor villager knows that if he did not vote for the ‘choudhary ji’ his post-election life will be miserable, of course he is going to vote for the ‘choudhari ji’. The poor villiger is not foolish or stupid. He knows the hand that feeds him. Why Pakistan never had a real land reform and wealth redistribution? Why there is no agriculture tax on the large land holdings? Why there is no income-expense record of major shrines? Why all the labourers in a factory are skinny individuals with spindly legs while the factory owner is the fattest cat around? Why we have failed to establish a social welfare state? Do you ever wonder why? Because those responsible to improve the lot of the people, politicians and dictators alike, are too busy preserving their own selfish interests.

  26. Reza Kamran says:
    March 24th, 2008 3:31 pm

The big question as Adil so rightly points out is whether he can bring meaningful democratic change or become another powerless PM.

Change has to be meaningful. Otherwise it can become quite meaningless. To effect meaningful change, you need to be willing to make change. Change as they say is the only constant. But, to reach that constant, you need several variables in motion. Because the moment such change leads to nil results, meaninglessness sets in. As meaningfulness leads to meaninglessness, change is questioned. The more change is questioned, the less meaningful it becomes. And as this progression moves forward, change itself imparts new meaning in politics. Hope Gilani does not fall into that trap. He needs to make change at the right time. If done incorrectly, we have seen meaningless change with no results. And hence with both no change and meaningless change setting in, powerlessness takes over. With more and more powerlessness, effective and meaningful change elude such makeovers. So, for change to be meaningful, it has to be both powerful and effective and above all enduring.

Some are predicting Gillani will be a PM only temporarily until they figure out a way for Zardari to get the top post. Why else would they nominate him, when it was obvious that Amin Fahim, a loyal PPP leader, wanted the post so badly?

United Nations Investigation of alleged charges of corruption against Zulfiqar Bhutto, Benezer Bhutto, Asif Zardari, Sharif Brothers and other high ranking politicans including Gilani himself.
This is the only way to get a clean slate for every alleged charges of corruption and restore full faith in democracy and come clean.

Nothing funny in what I said. The election of PM is serious business. All I said was that if change has to be meaningful, it needs to be effective and enduring. If Gilani brings change too soon, too much, it may be to his detriment. So, he has to pace the change he plans to bring for it to be meaningful.

Hope I have clarified my point.

There is a little ghatiya behavior in some of the emails floating around on Mr. Gillani. Whether you politically like him or not, this type of cheap tactics are unbecoming. Its amazing just how much of a gutter mentality some of our so-called educated people have, even some very respected blogs have stooped to that. I am so glad that ATP has not.

I have never liked the PPP and specially do not like how this guy was made PM. But he is now PM after a free election. I will at least give him a chance. I will criticize him if he does wrong but wil not stoop to the type of cheap and ghatiya things that people are floating about him on the internet. It is disgusting what some people’s hatred will drive them to do.

Dear All. It is as simple as that, that an ordinary man wants to see his top leaders as flawless, upright and standing firm on higher moral grounds.

Digging out good and bad things about a leader from their past is not unnatural. When ever leaders are discussed in history, the ir whole life comes into focus.

    Hi all,

I think that this is indeed a moment of rejoice, a short one though. Certainly made of landlords pirs and wealthy ones, with no clear economic agenda, the greatest achievement of this governments so far is to be where they are…sipmly. Ain’t it a great achievement in itself? Of course I am talking about this process of coalition formation. Sindhi, punjabi, pathan balouch working together to form a government of national alliance against anti-democratic forces. Isn’t it the first time in the history of this country. People of pakistan elected them with all their good and bad aspects. For now, let’s wish them the best of luck, we have got several years to comment upon their solid actions.

I do not understand why we always look on the negatives. Please give the new PM a chance and judge him after a year or so. How many of us, who are arm chair critics, opted to be in jail for five years rather than compromise with a dictator. You cannot have elections every month or have PMs change like the flavor of the month.

The reason the feudal lords get elected is because many of the so called educated class are too comfortable with their jobs and businesses and do not want to risk being a politician. Most of the critics did not even risk going to vote because of security concern.

We the public are The Power. Just recognise yourself and stnad up for building Pakistan. As we did in Judiciary case.

As long as we are alive, no one can go against the will of the people. After all Pakistan was created by the will of the people and not by force.

Now, we have to remove American influence from the Country without which nothing can be changed.

However, Gillani is proving that he is a man of action and quite determined to make history and may become perhaps as influential a PM as late ZAB with equal power. I think M K Junejo was the best Pm we ever had. He may join him.
We all should wish him luck.
I admire him for starting the austerity drive at 40%.

It is sad that under an elected governemnt this time we have a stooge Prime Minister who has no power or influence since everything is run by Zardari. I guess Yousuf Raza Gillani is to Zardari what Shaukat Aziz was to Musharraf, but worse.

    Dear Team,

This is Urooj from Lahore. I have complain, appeal whatever you choose it’s up to you after being so much annoyed I am writing all this I desperately wanted to go UK for studies and to earn money but my status isn’t allowing me to do so I want to ask why ? why there is so much restrictions for a Pakistani to go abroad ? why don’t you guys help us to make our future more bright ? I applied in number of universities of UK i-e ABC School Of English, Boston College , Stanford University, EC English but failed cause of the expenses after that I asked them for financial aid from every university but they simply denied and why they should ? Our Government never give the financial aids so why other countries ? just think about the hassle once to get UK visa passport , get admission in any UK university , admission letter , visa letter and most of all bank statement should be of 30 lacs to make your case strong wow now you tell me how I can make my bank statement strong a girl who is earning 20K per month where to get 30 lacs ? if I would have 30 lacs will I be in need of to do job of customer relationship officer ? why I can’t go abroad to study to learn ? why every where the money does matter ? why the skills devotion determination can’t make any difference ? I know very well this mail wouldn’t be read by any one and it will be bin but I have just one question why richer is getting richer day by day and poor is getting more poor ?

Yousaf Raza Gilani belongs to a noble family, being a Muslim every one respect all those who belonged to this family, but Mr. Gillani really deserved for that respect. although he is politician but i think he is also a good man and he has great respect for all other politicians and i think that’s why he is still working as a Prime Minister. I think he is loyal with his party, because his loyalty could see when he is workingas a positive person. He should not care about his future that what his party’s senior leadership will do with him, he should be focus on right path and Pakistan today, really needs for this.

    To,
    The Prime Minister
    PAKISTAN

    Sir,
Most respectfully I beg to state that I belong to a poor family. I have limited resources. My Son HAMAD ALAM has completed the B.com an year ago. After completion of Education he also has applied for the jobs at many places but still jobless. His father was a government servant and now has retired from his services so running a home is now becoming impossible for us.
All of my daughters and a son are getting education. My Husband has retired in the June 2010. He has applied for many posts in different departments like the Ministry of Defense, CDA, and Pakistan Military Accounts Department, Pakistan Railway and government service hospital. He has also received the letters of written tests of the above departments. I have written this letter and begging you to please adjust him to any of the post for which he has applied. So that he would be able to run our family and fulfill the basic needs of our life. Please sir I beg you to help me by providing job to my son. I will be very thankful to you for this act of kindness.

    Yours Obediently,
    FARZANA YASMIN

Urgent Appeal for Suo Moto Action:PIA Affairs – Selection of Cadet Pilots 23rd July 2011-playing with lives of innocent Passengers
    Respected Sir,
It is known to every body that selection of Pilot cadet is important as survival of human lives depends upon them.
1.Pakistan International Air Lines (PIA) advertised for Cadet pilots in April 2011 but few influential boys were not eligible so positions were re-advertised. Again May 2011 interview was cancelled as influential applicants wanted so.
2.Finally objective papers was given on 23rd July and exam was concluded around 0900-1200 PM. Around 3 PM passed list was released after claiming that paper of 200 candidates were checked manually. Very obviously only those candidates passed those had connections or had relatives in PIA or reportedly could have managed price.

Out of the candidates selected many of them were highly incompetent with high failure rates in all C.A.A examinations and as well as changing many schools for the flight training i.e
Shahbaz Mangi and Nadir Ali Magsi.

3.Glaring mistakes were apparent in the paper made in haste.
E.g:- S instead of 5 in Metar decoding weather questions etc.

4.Boys with less than 200 hours were declared selected.
Candidates with over 1500 hours or so,with international experience were declared fail.
    Toran 1200 hours (New Zealand)
Babar Sultan 900 hours (Peshawar )
Saad Tariq 700 hours (United States)
Ali Gardezi 4000 hours (United States)
Mustafa Ali 1000 hours (South Africa), etc., etc.

3.Main person Orakzai MD PIAgot shifted his son Shan Yousafzai from KP quota to Karachi quota. Most of the boys who were sitting idle in exam and did nothing on paper were declared selected.Mr Orakzai had lost his pilot license in past due to his lack of professional expertise etc.
4.Likewise in past, no marks were declared for selected candidates.
5.On the instructions of allegedly criminal minded MD PIA Orakzai, domiciles of various boys were changed so as to get maximum benefit.
    6. Criminal mafia made it sure that all the sons of PIA pilots are passed. (Zohaib Ahmad Sheikh-Last year Sindh Rural and this year Karachi Domicile) etc.
7.This selection by criminal mafia will be responsible for playing with lives of passengers travelling with this hand picked stuff of Pilots based upon var.
8.Crimnal Mafia has minted money also by using names of highest personalities of Pakistan for 100 percent fraud .
They have hinted names of President Zardari,Prime Minister Gillani.
In the name of justice personalized selection be stopped and matter be investigated,re-examination on pure merit be done and Criminal mafia responsible for this fraud be taken to task.
    Yours sincerely
