Adil Najam

PIA print advertisement from the 1960s (Originally uploaded by PakPositive.com which is a blog that highlights the positives aspects of Pakistan).

Let me continue with the ‘Image Pakistan’ theme in choosing the picture for today. I find this advert for PIA absolutely fascinating; both for what it says about how PIA (Pakistan International Airlines) saw itself and how it saw Pakistan (or wanted Pakistan to be seen).

Was this the reality of Pakistan before theso-called ‘darhi wallahs’ took center stage? Or was this ‘image’ of Pakistan as much out-of-sync with the reality of what was Pakistan then, as the image of the bearded-gun-totting-bomb- throwing-jihadi-Pakistani is today?

Speaking of ‘image’ and ‘brand’ the Association of Pakistani Professionals (AOPP) has recently launched an initiative on the subject and held a thoughtful and thought-provoking event on he subject in New York on June 3. I was asked to moderate part of the program, and found the discussion to be mature, reasoned and reasonable–something we should have more of.

Salam, the only thing disturb me a lot is “We simply dont have our own Brain, no way to choose our way of life” so let me explain you, here in west all possible problems are being imposed on Muslims starting from wearning Scarf for Muslim ladies to Building Minarats for Masjid’s ( in our country unfortunatly due to propoganda of hidden powers, we start to belive is freedom is live in whatever way one wants wearning cloths or not should be one’s own choice) so my dear Brothers and Sisters wake up, wake up. If there is nudity around you one day it will become part of your life and your children’s one. We get our Pakistan so that we can practice our religion without interfarance of other’s but unfortunatly they have penetraint between us and now we are crying to live the way they want !!!

rightly said jawwad sahab that who are we to decide what a strange woman should wear or what she should not wear . . .
yes . . . similarly if a woman wants to wear burqa then you should not feel her inferior or a man wants to wear a beard with typical shalwaar kameeez its his CHOICE!!

  3. arshad says:

Jawad Sab, U should rather say…
“Long live Freedom, Long live Nudity, Long live Pornography”
The people like U are desperate to turn this region into a sex-free zone.

All the guys on here who think that this image is demeaning to women should read the comments are are written by women. Most women see this ad as a self-assertation. So empower the women; let them chose what they want or not want to wear. who the hell are you to tell a woman what she should do. only guys who lack in self-confidence treat women as inferior – a problem with over 90% pakistani men. i wish i could their hypocritical self-righteousness.
