Adil Najam

I just find this photograph – taken last week in Peshawar – so very interesting. What do you think will happen next? Will one or both of them fall? Will they make it to their destination? Do you think they know each other or is the guy on the bicycle tagging along uninvited? What do you think is in the boxes? What does the ‘takhti’ at the front of the motorcycle read? Why is the guy on teh bicycle resting his foot on the bar instead of the pedal?

There is obviously no answer to any of these questions, but sometimes the simplest of compositions about everyday life makes you think. Even smile!

I think they belong to the same delivery team. Their confident looks tell me they do this on an every day basis and that may be the reason why the bicyclist has his foot up on the bar. Takhti has safr-ki-dua. I believe there’s very little chance either of them will fall, they are seasoned at this. The goods will be delivered on time! Zaroorat eejad ki maa hoti hai.

Yes, they appear to be quite used to doing this feat. Bicyclist’s foot on the bar insteadof pedal might be a requirement of the balancing act.

They are probably part of a team. But if they hit something then what? The other person is mad and all their samaan also gets lost. Not pretty!

I guess the bicycle guy is just holding onto the bike dude stuff so he doesn’t have to pedal! just taking rest while the biker dude drags him along :)

Great pic. Proves we CAN cooperate. Why dont we cooperate more in other things?

What will happen next? Looks like they have years of experience doing this; they will get to their destination. Obviously, they are implementing a low pollution solution to commercial transportation. At least they are not hurting anyone, just doing their jobs the best they can; to make a living.

Do they know each other? They must be from the same Muslim sect!

What is in the boxes? Probably not explosives.

What does the Takhti say? Akailey Na Jana

Given that they seem to be paying more attention to the photographer and not a lot to maintaining balance, it would seem that they have been doing this for a while.

At first glance it looks like the guy on the right is holding on just to avoid pedaling, and has one foot off the wheel for added bravado. But no, if you look carefully, the placement of the foot, his holding on to the other bike, etc are all essential for him to create a center of gravity in the middle of the bicycle. Simply brilliant.

I think Eidee Man is on to something. If the guy on the bicycle did not have his feet on the bar, the cycle will probably fall into the motorcycle.

    Physics rules!

no something like this…Warning! may not be suitable for weak hearts

I agree with my friend Ajnabi!
Its very common in Pakistan, I had been doing the same being a student, once I drove my bike to railway station with a car. All physics rules go to hell at that time due to experience. So need not to worry about falling of any body.

@ShahidnUSA: I don’t see the relevance of Britney’s song? Plus what’s so heart fainting about it? I guess its about what you are used to, or not…

Atif Mirza Sahib, Physics ALWAYS rules. That is why its called a LAW. Whether people know what they are doing or not if they are in balance that is because of physics.

Given the traffic in Pakistan and their cockiness, they are bound to ultimately fall and what will happen next is a lot of angry people and some haatha pai!

It seems to be depicting Pakistan’s delicate reliance on the Americans. While Pakistan can get to its destination by self-reliance (by peddling the bike), it wants America’s money, weapons and equipment to get there (motorcycle), no matter how dangerous or irresponsible….But such is life!

    To Abizaib,
    Britney says in her song
“There are only two types of people in the world. The one who perform and the one who observe”
The gentlemen are also performing in their capacity though inappropriate choice of venue. Something I try to be careful of.
I see a relevance in an entertaining way and its ok if you dont.

This is silly. Obviously they know each other and are on the same job, and he has his foot up on the bar to better distribute the weight, as he has his arm outstretched on that side.

Do they fall? Probably not, they’re probably pros at this. Hell, I’ve done that so many times back when I ferried pharmaceuticals back and forth for my uncle’s store.

I understand what you were trying to do, evoke discussion/imagination, but really, this is rather hum-drum and obvious.
