My favorite drama in which Shafi took part as the lead character was ‘Officer on Special Duty’. It was a PTV long play and Shafi acts as a honest civil servant who goes to a rural area on special assignment. It was interesting to see how he had to deal with ‘sifarish’, ‘rishwat’, ‘aqarba-parwari’ etc of local feudals who try to buy him to their side.

Chand Garahn was ofcourse his most famous play.

The picture reminds of his glory days. This is Aanch right? He had lost a lot of weight in recent years. Bilkul changed?

Thats indeed a sad news. Shafi Muhammad was undoubtedly one of the best actors Pakistan Television has ever produced. I had always been his big fan. Shafi Muhammad had his own very special style which was calm yet impressive and ofcourse very naturalistic.

Owais, the long play you mentioned was one of my favorite too but I guess its name was “your obedient servant”.

May Allah rest his soul in peace, Ameen.

No doubt he was a great actor and great person.

The picture posted above was taken from famous drama serial “Aanch”- Late Shafi Muhammad was at peak in that drama. His soft accent was so “heavy” above all performances.

Offcourse performance of Sohail Asghar as Jehaniah Shah and shafi as Dad was outstanding in “Chand Girhan”.

Since Nayyra Sang famous nazm of Noon.M.Rashid in Chand Girhan, I think Shafi might have same feelings?

I saw only one PTV drama in which he acted; can’t recall the name at this time.

His untimely death at such a young age is really saddening. May Allah(SWT) Grant him a peaceful abode, and give strength to cope with his loss to his bereaved family.

    Owais bhai
Many thanks for this post. What a loss – Shafi M was a brilliant actor and a trend setter.
May his soul rest in peace – his plays will live on..

  14. November 18th, 2007 6:04 am

I am really saddened by this. Maybe it is all the other bad news coming from Pakistan that magnifies the grief. But I was moved when I heard this news.

I remember Shafi from a generation of PTV actors who were superstars, particularly in serious character roles. This was a time when the real stars were not the ‘choclate heros’ but serious, more mature, older dramatic actors… Abid Ali, Mohammad Qavi, Shafi Mohammad, Firdous Jamal, Talat, and many others. It was quite a time for dramatic actors and the PTV drams seemed to be written for them. The golden age of PTV drama.

Shafi, I thought, had a particular sensibility and relished at bringing out divided personalities.. the soft-spoken villain was something he did particularly well (amongst many others). However, towards the end of his career I thought he was doing too many roles that did not fit him and his stature. It is a great loss, especially for his family to lose him so young. My prayers are with them.

I best liked his performance in PTV drama Tapish from Karachi studios, with Jamal Shah as a student leader in Karachi University and Rubina Shah, as the female protagonist and Shafi playing the character of Amhed Mushtaba, the master of doublespeak politician who sides with the military regime for personal gain.

The play was written by Noor-ul-Huda Shah and had it not been for Shafi’s brillant acting it wouldn’t be half as good a drama. Also, Faiz’s Bol sung by Tina Sani made the sound track out of this world.

May god rest his soul in peace.

For people who grew up watching the 5 o’clock Sindhi dramas on PTV in Karachi, Shafi’s voiceover for some studly model of the day in those “KaRak Cha” jo commercials was an added treat. Miss him :(

Shafi saab was a great actor, one of the best Pakistan has ever produced. His acting was just superb. I recall one of his recent dramas where he plays a pliant follower of a sufi, his acting in that is just top class.

Pakistan mourns his loss, we wish him the Garden of Paradise.

Death is never Untimely … it comes at right time and right moment. Only Allah Almighty knows the best that’s been kept for us.

Thought to point out, a very common thing most of us say at times of one’s departing … its not appropriate.

I want to express my great sadness on hearing of the death of this great icon of Pakistani television. Shafi Mohammad Shah was one of the most natural, powerful and versatile actors ever to grace television and films. He had a unique screen presence and an inimitable voice and style of dialogue delivery. To fans of Pakistani dramas he was like a family member. Somebody who was a regular fixture in their lives of two or more decades. In real life, he demonstrated humility and compassion as witnessed by his numerous interviews and the testmonies of his grief-stricken friends. It is no exageration that one feels his loss very personally. May Allah grant him a place in Paradise and may his soul forever rest in peace. His work will live foreover in our minds and hearts, and his voice will always resound in our ears. Long Live Shafi Mohammad!

Aanch is the type of emotional drama i have never seen in my whole life.
It was awesome and heart touching. I never knew it was gret(Now late) Mr. Safi. Later i came to know that, he was Shafi Md. Shah. I knew him only after his death. It was the biggest shock for me. Bcoz, I grew up watching his dramas on TV from my childhood. Althouth I am Indian , i have watched lot of his serials on Nepal television. His style of dialogue delivering was very natural especially in AANCH.

    May Allah bless his soul.
