During the discussion in our Bazm-e-Eid Mehfil, there was an interesting to-and-from inititaed by Mast Qalandar on the following shey’r:
Eid ka din hai, gallay aaj tou mill lay zalim
rasm-i-duniya bhi hai, moqa bhi hai, dastoor bhi hai
I just found this video of a Lollywood film song built around what seems to be a version of the same shey’r. I do not know if the version in the film came first or the one seen at the back of trucks, but it makes for interesting and nostalgic viewing.

Makes me think you should also do something on Nadeem and Shabnam. They have done much better work than this.

We are Pakistan. We are responsible for generating the “Golden-Era(s)”. Open your TV sets, the revolution has already begun. The two decades of pessimism and isolation is now fading away. Pakistan will rise as the most modern, conscious and elegant nation, InshaAllah.

Mast Qalandar, my own view would be that this is from the ‘post-golden era’ period ;-) (A period when the Nadeem-Shabnum pair ruled… the Zeba-Mohammad Ali period preceded that slightly, even though there were overlaps)
Now, Is that Nadeem and Zeba? She looks so pretty.

Thanks for sharing this. I was not aware of this song. I thought those lines were only “truck poetry”.
The interesting thing, however, is that the character in the song is using a religious tradition of embracing each other (of the same gender, of course) on Eid as an excuse for enticing a “ghair-mehram” into a heterosexual embrace — a totally non-sanctioned activity. I am surprised the censors in Pakistan let it pass. But, obviously, the movie was made during the ‘golden era’ of Pakistan.

However, must say that I don’t like the song itself much… I will take the Bus version of the she’r any day, especially with the ‘zalim’ added in and imagine it being read out with a mischevous smile on the face ;-)
