Adil Najam

Many of you would already have seen this photograph.

It shows a policeman (of the Punjab Police, I believe) helping hang billboards showing the election symbol of ‘bicycle.’ The bicycle, by the way, is the electoral symbol of the ruling party PML(Q), whose supposed Prime Ministerial candidate Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is the Chief Minister of Punjab and, therefore, the direct boss of this poor cop.

By the way, from the look of it this official van is holding lots of other billboards; most likely with the same symbol. For the uninitiated we should note that the Blue Toyota Hilux vans are the vehicle of choice for the Punjab Police. Also note the word (in Urdu) ‘Police’ at the back of the van and the green number plate. Both signifying that this is an official government vehicle. The policeman, of course, is also in official uniform – duly armed – and ‘assisting’ in what is clearly political campaigning.

My first thought had been to ask people to suggest a funny title for this… maybe something like “Police ka hai farz madad aap ki!” (It’s the Police’s duty to help you) which used to be the slogan of the police service. However, there is very little about this picture that is funny. And their is plenty that is truly disturbing.

ZARDARI SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TURN PAKISTAN INTO BHUTTOISTAN
HE MUST LIMIT UNNECESSARY PROJECTION OF THE PORTRAIT OF HIS LATE WIFE BENAZIR TO HIS BEDROOM OR PPP OFFICES ONLY – AN EYE OPENER FOR PAKISTANIS
    (published in Nawaijang London)

Any Pakistani will not like to see the status of the founder Hadhrat Mohammad Ali Jinnah the Quaid-e Azam (ra) to be undermined, compromised and or lowered at any level. The beginning and end of all, any and every official proceedings of the government of Pakistan must rest with the attribute to the Quaid-e-Azam. It has been noted with great sadness that the current leaders of Pakistani Government of the PPP most especially Mr Zardari the President of Pakistan is carrying the portrait of his late wife Benazir to all functions and programmes at the national and international levels as if he is doing so on behalf of the nation. This action is not liked by right thinking Pakistanis who do not and will not like to place any political leader at par with Quad-e-Azam (ra). This trend of unnecessary projection of the PPP leaders is seen with bad taste generally by all Pakistanis.

It was disgusting to note that he did not pay any tribute to the Quaid-e-Azam throughout his 45 minutes first address to the joint house of parliament. Rather he paid more homage to Zulfiqar Alin Bhutto his father in-law, Benazir Bhutto his wife and Murtaza Bhutto his brother in-law. He just mentioned few words about Quaid-e-Azam along with so called and self made Quaid-e-Awam.

    He displayed his late wife
