Following photo is courtesy of _tunnel_. The photo was taken on May 14, 2008 in Malir, Karachi. Private educational institutions have become big business in Pakistan, but this picture is also about so much more. What comes to your mind when you see this?

Agree with Dusty on this one. It reminds me of “Princeton University” in Karachi offering MBA and other business programs, when in fact, the real Princeton does not have a business school.
Nice post,
As a former Chicagoan , I do remember this University which is being run by Dr.Wasiullah Khan who I think is from Hyderabad, India but has quite number of Desi Faculty and students as well.
Hello,
I’m from Chicago, and I have actually been to the campus there. So the university is legit, however, I think this picture is sad and depressing!
Yousuf, thanks for giving the correct location.
No this is not Landhi. It’s actually 1 bus stop away from Karachi Airport. The pic is taken from Sharae Faisal. It’s a railway station alright, but it’s called Malir Halt Station. Landhi is about approx 30 mins from here. I know this much because this campus is in Refah-e-aam society and I live there. This univ popped up just recently (less than a year ago). Not sure if it’s operating or not… I haven’t seen much ppl in here. Used to be some sort of warehouse before.
True, ppl continue to be obsessed by US and UK names attached to schools and colleges here. I’ve seen Boston Public School, Bill Gates Institute of Tech in Gulshan.
I think what the sign really shows is how so many years post colonialism we are still in awe of the west. Attach USA, some state of the the US, UK or London in specific to the name of the product or service you are offering and it becomes much easier to sell it. Like it or not, it works.
I am sure the owner gets more admissions because the name of his/her university has “Chicago” in it as opposed to the student base he/she would’ve managed to get if the name had been “Ali Khan University” or “Dadukhel University”.
i am sorry to read some comments. I am wondering how few people are relating a good education only with institutes having large gardens big gates & loaded building.
This building is located near Malif halt Station, that is why one can see the railway coach.
A quick search on East-West University Chicago shows this link here
but I doubt if this university has a legitimate branch in Landhi
