Many people are calling the recent inflation of food prices world wide a silent tsunami. As we have covered it at ATP before, Pakistan is also facing this crisis. In case of Pakistan it can also be argued that the cause of inflation here is as much internal (e.g. Govt policy and food hoarding) as it is external (e.g. oil prices, world rice price). Before the topic gets too serious, how about this ‘sher’ which remains one of my favourites.

A friend recently forwarded me the food price list of a ‘bachat bazaar’ of Pakistan. It is an eye opener. That sample price list and the translation of above Urdu ‘sher’ for our English readership is below (next page).

The video to the right is from BBC urdu and is making runs on Internet these days. It shows the Independence Day events of August 14, 1947. One can see rare glimpses of people and events here including Mr. Jinnah, Lord Mountbatten, Liaqat Ali Khan, Fatima Jinnah, Lady Mounbatten etc.The video does not have any audio. I wish there was some sound to it too.Other historic videos of 1947 and Pakistan’s creation can be seen in earlier ATP posts, here and here.

Following photo appeared in the daily Dawn of May 18, 2008. It sohws a small business stall in Rahimyar Khan, Pakistan. What caught my attention to this photo is the sheer diversity of business being caried out from this small stall. The Urdu words written on the stall advertise for ‘desi’ Eggs, a public telephone call office and EZ load Cellular phone SIMs. All of these products and services are available here. And as if this was not diverse enough, the stall is also selling smuggled Iranian petrol at a rate much cheaper than Pakistan State oil’s prices. Note funnels and bottles full of cheap Iranian petrol on top of the stall.
