As I was reading the sad story on ATP about an official government car, reportedly in the use of the Syed Safwanullah, Federal Minister of Housing and Works, crushing to death a 6-year old child, another incident which is even more tragic occured in Lahore and surprisingly got very little media attention initially.
According to Daily Times:
The case dates back to November 26, when Waseem Sajjad Malik, a cellular phone-company employee (resident of 292/293-B, Punjab Corporative Society), lost control of his car and hit a tree allegedly because of two racing cars near
Masjid Chowk in Defence. One of the two cars (LWJ-700) belonged to Faisal Farooq, son of a prominent confectioner. Waseem’s two-month old baby, born five years after his marriage, went through the screen and fell about 20 feet away. Waseem, his mother and his wife were injured. Waseem’s baby went into a comma right away. Passers-by caught Faisal Farooq, who fled when he saw that they were calling the police. The victims were admitted to hospital with multiple fractures and the baby died shortly after that. Defence police registered a case against Faisal Farooq.
Faisal Farooq’s family, close to senior police officers, intervened. Allegedly, Faisal Farooq, his uncles Mehmood and Maqsud, and five people carrying weapons went to the National Defence Hospital on November 29, where they threatened Waseem’s brother-in-law Mutahir and asked him to withdraw the case. They locked Mutahir in a room, allegedly, beat him up, and fled. Senior policemen then directed the Defence ASP to make sure another case was not registered, but another group of police officers also intervened and got a case registered.
A large number of people have received SMS messages on their mobile phones asking them to boycott the products of the confectionary chain owned by Faisal’s father. “Faisal Farooq, son of [the owner of a confectionary] hit a car while racing, killing a baby and injuring a family,� the message read. “Faisal and a squad of gunmen then threatened the family,� it says, “that if a case was registered, he would kill the rest of the family.� The SMS requested the readers to boycott the confectionary responding to the demand of “the soul of an innocent infant and the tears of his parents�.
Officials of the cellular phone company in which Wasim worked denied that they were involved in circulating the SMS. “How can we stop people from sending messages to each other on the subject?� the public relations manager said. People were free to SMS anybody they wanted, he said, and the company had not initiated the campaign. Police spokesman declined to speak on the issue and the CPC was not available for comment.
The confectionary, of course, is teh famous Nirala Sweet House.
I am not sure what to say about this. Incidents like this happen every now and then and only just a few become known to us. Waseem and his family have now got media attention 
and I am sure they have full support form Mobilink which will help them in a painfully slow, complicated and costly legal battle ahead. But in most cases, unfortunately, rich and powerful easily get away with murder and this happens everywhere.
The most unfortunate part of this story is that the baby is dead. Whatever we say or do now is useless in a way and nobody can bring him/her back. It also makes me wonder whats the logic of blessing someone a child after so many years and then take away in split second? Only Allah knows the best. We can only offer our prayers to the victim’s family.
Lets hope that all of us in Lahore will keep the pressure on, even if it means Boycotting Nirala. Lets exercise our basic right to protest against injustice which we have long forgotten as a nation. I know most of us feel powerless to prevent injustice but lets not fail to protest atleast. Please call or email your friends and family in Pakistan – in Lahore, in Karachi – and ask them not to buy at or accept gifts from Nirala. I do not know if this will make a difference. But at least we would not have sat and done nothing. And who knows, maybe if enough of us boycott Nirala it will hurt these people where it hurts them most; in their wallets.

There is so much anger (justifiable) at the “Nirala Kid” involved in or having caused the accident in Lahore that resulted in the death of an infant. What surprises me, however, is that there is total silence on the death of the 6 year old Afghan boy in Islamabad a few days earlier, allegedly caused by a “baji” driving a 4-wheel vehicle belonging to a federal minister. The incident was widely reported in the press including on this blog. (SEE HERE)
I have been wondering what is it that triggers so much emotions in one case and hardly any in the other. Is it because there are some “purda-nasheens” involved in the Islamabad case or is it because the victim in this case was a poor Afghan with whom we cannot relate?

rumour mills are running fast as ever…………..some people are saying that the waseem sajjad brother in law pointed a gun at farooq when he came to the hospital but where would a middle class boy get a gun………..and if he did got one why would he take it to the hospital where his sister was addmitted when their is no chance of the culprit showing up b coz he ran off from the scene of the crime in the first place ……………
the truth is mr farooq came to the hospiatl wid his guards when no body was willing to forgive him ………..he decide to threaten him …………..he took the matter into his hands took the baby uncle into the bathroom and beat him up quite badly…………………….
i dont understand why people are making it a issue of the poor against the rich…….and the general public unjustly supporting the poor…………….while on the other hand waseem sajjad is quite rich himself……
i have nothing watsoever to do wid the coporate world……….i know these details because waseem sajjad is my relative.

if one cannot stop smth bad from happening , we shld atleast try and condemn it…………….it made me really sorry to see that some ppl thing that it wont be worthwhile boycotting nirala products……..shame on anyone who wont boycott them …..we wont be dead without eating their products…….we will certainly survive……..so why dont we giv it a chance and see wat happens……….we v all boycott nirala product i wont b surprised if their spokeperson came out with an apology…………….it is high time v changed the country……..b coz next time it cud b us suffering……….just b coz we didnt raise voice against injustice in the past doesnt mean v cannot do it now………..
now the couple was not married for five years .they infact got married in the year of 2004…i went to their marriage………it was a love marriage…….the wife name was Ayesha…………..they worked at the same place…..their they fell in love………..the baby was two months old namely aarij………..his grand mother was also in the car….the baby was sitting in his mother lap who was sitting on the backseat…………..
i dont know about u ppl …………but i m boycotting nirala products and i m going to ask my friendz to do the same
few months ago my maid nephew got runover by three cars in defence…………………………….
it is high time we did smth abt those ppl who think that they own this world

Bhutoo was hanged…. But did it bring any difference? We still have Banazir, Nawaz Shareef and Musharaf… they all doing the same thing…. This is the problem with us lot all we do is TALK and do nothing… there are so many problems in Pakistan…. i think its not faisal to be blamed or waseem! I think government should be blamed for letting ppl, use the phone wile drive, letting ppl import fast cars, it’s the government and the traffic police to be blamed for not designing the roads properly….. I think we are [including my self as im a Pakistani] are the one at fault for choosing the wrong leaders…..
It is indeed very sad to know people have heart of stone.. this could happen to anyone.. who are with nirals or against them.. and ofcourse they have to be tought some lesson and be punished for their deeds.. over all we dont know what Allah has in plans, but there is something called justice…
