A friend has forwarded me this notice which is wordprocessor printed and taped on top of an elevator (‘Lift’) door, somewhere in a Pakistani building.

The English translation reads:

“ATTENTION: BEFORE ENTERING THE LIFT CHECK WHETHER LIFT IS PRESENT OR NOT!”

This is hilarious enough, but the Urdu message at the top of this translation has one extra sentence which didn’t get translated to English and that is the punch line. A kind of dark comedy. I’ll translate it for our non-Urdu readership. It says:

“Make sure it doesn’t happen that you reach ground floor without an elevator.”

Wise words, indeed!

I totally agree with bananafish, their are some old fashioned lifts in the old buildings in Pakistan, one of my friend without realising it opened the door and fell from Ground floor to the basement, he was lucky that he was not unconscious otherwise the lift coming from the top to the basement could have finished his life. So my friend this is not hilarious at all.
