Owais Mughal

A friend has forwarded me this notice which is wordprocessor printed and taped on top of an elevator (’Lift’) door, somewhere in a Pakistani building.

The English translation reads:

“ATTENTION: BEFORE ENTERING THE LIFT CHECK WHETHER LIFT IS PRESENT OR NOT!”

This is hilarious enough, but the Urdu message at the top of this translation has one extra sentence which didn’t get translated to English and that is the punch line. A kind of dark comedy. I’ll translate it for our non-Urdu readership. It says:

“Make sure it doesn’t happen that you reach ground floor without an elevator.”

Wise words, indeed!

Rules and regulations always depend on people, how they think and feel different things.I want to say one thing that there is nothing hilarious, its quite painful,I do’t understand the mentality of people who can write like this but did’t try to close the doors of such elevators by somehow.
Criticism should lead to something productive otherwise its just a deluge of bitter and scornful words

Hey if roasted peanut packets can contain “may contain peanuts” warning, why can’t our lifts contain a “may contain lift” warning?

I am not sure if there are rules and regulations about elevators in Pakistan. In the US, they have to be checked periodically and a certificate is issued and the elevators have to be rechecked for the safety before the expiration of the certificate. If the elvator doors open without the elvator comes in, I would question about the safety laws of elevators in Pakistan.

Before you start to judge the hillarity of the said sign, consider this. Only in Islamabad, in the OGDC Tower, Shaheed Millat Secretariat and until recently in Marriott, people have died by falling down the elevator shaft when they simply stepped into the doors when they open thinking that they were stepping into the elevator. Lo and Behold…No elevator…malfunction…the result many deaths and this humble sign whihc now contributes towards saving the lives of the ignorant.

Few things are as hilarious and sad at the same time as this picture. In Pakistan there are plenty of these if you look around and its your choice - either be sad or just laugh it off.

Well, the picture was very funny and cheered up my morning until I got to Bilal’s comment, which was very tragic. Sorry to hear about that Bilal. But, the sign was still funny. Thanks for the post.
