It seems that YouTube is down in Pakistan. Possibly it is blocked.
Blocking websites is a rather bad habit that the government authorities in Pakistan have gotten into (here and here). This is something that we have written about before. It is silly habit, because technologically it does not work. But, much more importantly, it is a disturbing habit because it points towards a desire by those in authority to “control” the passions of the public. Democracy demands the very opposite - that the people control teh passions of those in power.
But the real question is, that if YouTube is blocked, then why?
There would be those who could imagine that it is because all of the mujras, soft porn and supposedly “sexy” and indecent material that might be “corrupting” Pakistani minds - not that the Pakistani or any human mind really needs YouTube to further “corrupt” our sensibilities!
But this time, the general opinion is that th ban is more “political” than “cultural”. A large number of videos with actual footages of electoral rigging were placed on YouTube and the view is that the “ban” or the “technical difficulties” that have come up are really a way to distract attention in Pakistan away from these videos, at least for the time being.
Here, for example, are two of the video … its being recorded secretly, so you will need to turn up the volume and listen carefully.

A number of other videos of such rigging have since been removed and one cannot be sure how long these will last. Given that this is YouTube, one should also put in a caveat that even though these look quite legit one can never be sure if these are propaganda or counter-propaganda instruments that are staged themselves. Of course some of this is all still in the realm of speculation, and we ask our readers to exercise due caution in the use and interpretation of all this.
The ban - if, indeed, it s not a technical hitch, may or may not be because of the videos. Even if it is not, it is despicable for the same reason previous bans were. And even if it is not, the videos themselves are despicable for all the obvious reasons. All of this will, of course, become all the more despicable if, indeed, there is a real ban or other government interference in this and it is because of these videos.

but if youtube (or wikipedia or whatever) cant control their users to abide by some rules to respect other people’s belief then what should a govt do?
Riaz Haq: Well said. It is not a very productive environment we are seeing these days. When Sharif was ousted by Musharraf we basically saw the same things happening then. Pakistan is stuck in a vicious cycle and people seem to lack sharp memories.

The level of animus toward Musharraf is amazing! The atmosphere is so politically charged, his haters hold him responsible for everything that goes wrong, even when a fuse blows in some remote part of Pakistan. Don’t forget, it was the favorite chief justice of Musharraf haters who ordered the blocking of “blasphemous” and “pornographic” sites and videos last year and it was our “independent judiciary” that forced singer Abrarul Haq to change the words of one of his popular songs. None of the key players in Pakistani have any respect for freedom of media. Just wait and see how the new “democratic” rulers behave as soon as they have a little power and become the target of media and judicial criticism. Instead of singling out any one person for our criticism, let’s try and fix the laws and the system to allow media liberty, judicial restraint, abuse of power etc.

It would be interesting to see whether Youtube removed the videos itself (due to complains, threats?) or whether the user removed himself. And why, together the blockade of the youtube site.
The two videos posted by AN are also no longer available; One simply can’t help but be amazed at the extent to which Musharraf will go to supress truth. What a shame! Given that Musharraf’s cronies got a mere thirdy odd seats in the national assembly INSPITE of rigging, what to say would’ve happened if elections were absolutely transparent, free and fair. I was also amused to hear Pervaiz Elahi and Ch.Shujaat say that unlike their opponents they would not complaint of rigging in the elections. One should ask them, how they can possibly complain of rigging when they themselves were controlling the elections… For them not complaining of rigging is therefore a necessity and not an option!
I am in the US, and could not open the above videos either? Youtube issue? or maybe the MAN is blocking it at work? :)) will try to access it from home.
