Owais Mughal

PHOTO 1

PHOTO 2

For a long time today, I kept debating with myself on which one of the above two photos to choose for this quiz. Both of these photos are such a great archive of our National radio and television history that I have decided to take exception to ATP’s tradition of using 1 photo per quiz. So can our knowledgeable readers guess on who’s who in the above two photos?

Hints: Both photos are from 1970. One person appears in both photos. Bottom photo is from Radio Pakistan’s Karachi Studio.

ANSWERS: See the answers here

  1. adeel says:

I too can only recognize Shakeel (and now looking closely, Qazi Wajid – to the left of the microphone in photo 2).

Owais, I was also observing people’s dresses. And the fair number of saRhi sporting ladies.

Also note the old versions of beverage bottles in photo 1. I think Shakeel is having a Sprite. The two lighter coloured ones in the middle on the table look like Fanta (one appears empty though). The darker ones (in front of the girls) might be coke but I have no memory of this bottle design.

  2. ASAD says:

Second from right in top pictre is Shakeel.

Razi Saheb, without telling whether you are right or wrong in your guesses (atleast not yet), I do want to build up further on your comment. I also grew up listening to ‘BachoN ki dunya’ on Radio Pakistan. I believe this program used to broadcast on every FRI morning. I always used to be totally confused on Munni baji‘s identity. For many years I thought Munni Baji of Radio Pakistan was the same person as Munni Begum of Pakistan Television :)

The reason must be that Munni baji never came on TV and the only person we used to see on PTV was Munni Begum of ‘ik baar muskura do’ fame. So I used to think that ‘ho naa ho’ it must be the same Munni Begum who changes her voice to ‘children like’ when she does ‘bachoN ki dunya’ on radio and then changes her voice to ‘adult like’ when she sings ghazals on PTV. Innocent days :) but you can’t blame me too much on this because of following reason.

I mean what was the chance that two ladies, both grown ups, and both in field of performing or vocal arts can both have a name like ‘Munni’ :)

Your comment brought back memories of my radio listening days.

While our readers are guessing the names of artists in these photos, I also want to bring to attention the photo details. Look at the dresses and hair styles of that era. Some of the hair styles, especially of men’s in first photo seem to be “in” again.

  5. Razi says:

My guess for Photo 1 is Shakeel, Qurban Jeelani, Roohi Bano and Neelofar Aleem (later Abbasi)

Faces that I can pick in Photo 2 are Mehmood Ali, Qazi Wajid, Muni Baji (of the famed Bachon Ki Dunya) and Neelofer Aleem.
