Much like the last photograph in our series on the F.E. Chaudhry Collection, this photograph is also about women at work. But in a different way.

This photograph, taken in Lahore probably in the 1960s, brings to light many Pakistani realities; some of which have changed, and some not.

I have often wondered – and seriously – if Pakistanis read?

No, not whether they can read. Illiteracy being what it is in Pakistan, there are many – too many – who obviously cannot. But this question does not pertain to them. This is about those who could read if
they chose to do so. But who often do not. The question, of course, is “why not?”

The following photo is courtesy of Mr. Waheed M. Zuberi. This banner was on display at the main Clifton Road opposite Park Towers in late 2007. For our English readership, the banner reads:

“Miracle of Nature: Milk Producing Male Goat”

and then the contact information is given. At first I wanted to pass on this photo thinking it was too speculative, like a news item that appears on evening newspapers, but then we do see natural and man made ‘miracles’ commercialized in circuses, Zoos, melas etc. This could be another natural phenomena being commercialized or it could be a fake but I found the banner very interesting to read.
