Baluchistan was hit by a cyclone named ‘Yemyeni’ four days ago and it has caused widespread havoc. BBC news site is reporting that 800000 people have been affected. Today there are even reports of rioting by the hungry people waiting for aid to arrive. Worst affected area is reported to be Turbat where water over ran the embankments of Mirani dam. Government aid has started pouring in slowly but a lot needs to be done. The detailed news about the cyclone and rain havoc across Baluchistan is all over the national and international media therefore at ATP we will let following images do the talking. This story was meant to be a part of the post on Panja Sahib that appeared on these very pages early this year. But I had left it out lest I make the post too lengthy. The post on Panja Sahib stayed on the Discussions Board for a day or two and then disappeared, I thought, forever. But I was intrigued to see recently that it had somehow climbed into the ATP “Top Hits” — somewhere at the bottom rungs, just below the Lal Masjid Assault. I don’t know how to interpret this climb, nor would I want to read too much into it. Is it, perhaps, the result of random hits signifying nothing? Nevertheless, it did make me look up the old story and post this one as a sequel to it.
Here is the story. On the night of October 29, 1922 a special train left Amritsar, headed towards Peshawar. Among the passengers on board were a number of Sikh prisoners who were being shipped to Attock Fort to serve their prison sentence of two and half years each.

Regular readers might have noticed that ‘something happened’ to our two side columns yesterday. Essentially, a lot of the material about past posts disappeared. You might also have noticed that we have been having ‘overload’ outages on the page (these are the equivalent of internet load-shedding, I guess; we have recently had days with nearly 10,000 visits/20,000 views). The former happened as a result of our attempt to fix the latter.
We have just undertaken an update of the back-end WordPress platform. In the long term this will hopefully improve the speed of the page. In the short term, however, we lost the material we had in our columns!We want to turn this situation into an opportunity and maybe start thinking seriously about something we have been thinking of thinking about for a while. A redesign of the page.
