Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).
I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.
I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

Subject: UET descriminating on religious grounds?
Dear Dr Dr Atta-ur-Rahman
AA
I hope you are well by the grace of Allah.
The UET Lahore has on this link http://tinyurl.com/yrfhy6 the Undergraduate Application form and it contains the following declaration;
Muslim Only
A) I solemnly declare that I believe that Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the last prophet of Allah and there is and was no prophet of Allah. And that I have firm faith in Islam and I am not the follower of any such person who claims to be a prophet of religious reformer after Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him). I do not belong to Qadiani, Ahmadi or Lahori Groups.
My question is, does the UET offer any special scholarships or facilities to the Qadiani/Ahmadi/Lahori group members and therefore need to identify them or is it just a case of religious discrimination? If the universities all over the world can do without getting into religious affiliation of candidates, why can’t Pakistani Universities?
Regards
xxxxxx
A letter to the editor that appeared in Pakistan link alleging falling standard at NED. Read Here
The education in Pakistan is very expensive and an ordinary man is totally disable to enlightened his mind with this education.
@Shameem Hassan
A lot depends on what exactly your son wants to study because every university is not good at every thing. Also if you could mention the foreign universities in which you are interested to send your son, which country etc. There are a lot of factors to be considered.
Recognition of a local degree depends on a number of factors, such as the demand for the skills in foreign countries. If there is lesser demand for skills, they won’t accept a Pakistani degree. But if there is more demand for those skills and lesser number of people possess them then he might be considered by companies working abroad.
If you could please narrow down your search to the following:
1) Which degree he wants to pursue?
2) Which foreign universities he is interested in and in which countries?
3) Does he want to go into the job market right after his degree or would like to pursue post-graduation qualifications?
In terms of landing a good stable job in the field of engineering in Pakistan, would it be wiser to send my son abroad for a foreign degree or would graduating from the top university, either NUST or GIK, be a better option? I have heard conflicting information from various sources. A degree from a top pakistani university would make sense as it would be more relevent to pakistan and allow for local job experience. Lastly, would the local degree be recognized internationally?
@Kashif
Is King Edward still a college affiliated with a university or is it itself a university?
