Another unfortunate development of the day and I am unable to understand who is advising government of making such foolish decisions.

It seems now that the Government of Pakistan has banned Kamran Khan Show as yet another casualty in the ongoing saga of the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s (CJP) removal from office. Geo has just made it public and Kamran Khan appeared on Geo News just a few moments ago and apologized to viewers that he would not be able to present his show due to this ban (audio of what he said, here).

It was Kamran Khan Show in which Mr Wasi Zafar’s misbehavior on VOA was reported (video of that program here). He was also the host of Geo’s live transmission which showed and commented on the misbehavior with Chief Justice of Pakistan and his family last Monday. I guess Kamran Khan has finally paid the price of speaking the truth and his efforts to present facts to the people of Pakistan.

GEO TV website has this information on how the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has banned this show:

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has imposed ban on “Aaj Kamran Khan Key Sath”, the famous programme of Geo Television Network.

“Aaj Kamran Khan Key Sath” has been stopped as the government has imposed ban on it, said the spokesman of the Geo Television Network.

It was regretted at 11:05 PM, when this programme starts daily, that the programme could not be aired due to government ban.

Reacting to the ban on this programme, Kamran Khan, the host of the programme, condemned the government action and said that there was no other agenda of the said programme except making people aware of real facts and correct analysis.

This is a direct attack on freedom of press and freedom of expression. Looks like we will now see more bans if Pakistani Media didn’t cooperate with the government. I am also wondering what will happen to the Ansaar Abbasi now. We should all condemn this unjust action? But HOW?

Here are two samples of video clips from the Kamran Khan Show related to this issue.

Here is GEO’s own report on the attack on its office.

Hamid Mir interviews Gen. Musharraf on the attack.

“This is a direct attack on freedom of press and freedom of expression. ”

How can there be an attack on something that does not exist in the first place?

Another slap in the face of all the pro-army, pro-Musharraf apologists. Turns out this dictator only likes free speech as long it doesn’t inconvenience him. This whole CJ episode is a serious issue, a debate on democratic values, on ad-hoc governments and dictators, on the freedom of the press. Don’t let the intensity die down.

  4. Kabir says:

This is clearly an attack on the freedom of speech. Kamran Khan simply reflected a true event. This is an attack on media. Geo should not have agreed to this. If the judiciary and journalism is caged then what are we left with?

    So here is my advice:
    1) Please advice Mr. Kamran Khan to continue his show on the alternative media such as blogs, youtube, metacafe, dailymotion etc. Even if he has to shoot it from his own home. Even more people will watch it now. Also contact foreign channels immediately like AlJazeera or Star Network to pick up the show.

2)The press n media MUST NOT give in to this intimidation and continue bringing the truth with even greater force. So other shows should pick up this story. If they impose a ban, so be it, they cant do that forever, let the nation see.

    3) File a petition (like LUMS did) against the Law minister, see if it can be posted here & signed. And Submit to the SC.

The People of Pakistan are with those who speak the truth and stand for justice & peace.

Welcome to the real world!! Phrases like ‘freedom of speech & expression’ look quite funny. Somehow, I am remembering an indian movie, I don’t remember the story but the name of the movie was ‘Ghundaa Raaj.’

This is getting too much…..government should not take these kind of steps against the media…..what they have done is already so so wrong……what are making the situation even worst…..this is ridiculous!!!

    March 17th, 2007 10:30 pm

I wil not mind if the government learns some lessons from this and realizes that people are watching them. Maybe the silver lining is that they are learning lessons. Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz, Durrani, Wasi Zafar have all apologized. Now if the SJC hearing is a fair one and things actually change then maybe this will all end for the better. In the long run, I would prefer the government learning the lessons of democracy and changing its future path (specially in 2007 elections), rather than more chaos and instability through a fall of government.

What in the world is going on in Pakistan ! first the CJ – then all the nice talking from our great Law minister and now this ! what should we expect more from the President after this? As they say “apnay pair per kulhaari marna” this is exactly what the President has done – I was a big fan of the President before this event and I’m sure a lot of other Pakistanis feel the same way as I do now after this unfortunate event, I’m not in favour fo the CJ neither am I in favour of the President but the Constitution 209 clause 6 – 7 clearly states that the president cannot take this action alone, this is a shameful act and the President should himself come up on TV and address this issue.

This translation from DT: “These are defining moments in the history of Pakistan and media should report honestly without any fear.Don’t fear, speak up. If you don’t, the time to speak will pass. It is your duty to speak the truth, so don’t fear when you speak the truth.â€

Could we as a society finally be coming of age? I used to hear a lot of people say that we needed one good leader (saviour) to put things right. It seems to me, that today a lot of us are finally looking within themselves and wondering what THEY CAN do! I think that today we have not one hero, but quite a few of them around us. I think the press has been wonderful. It’s because of them that we know what’s going on. Some may have backed down a bit when under pressure, but only a bit. I can’t imagine the pressure they must be going through, but they are still managing to go on and keep telling the truth. I think editors, analysts and tv journalists/presentators have done and are still doing a great job. Other heros include our lawyers (with reservations about stone throwing), judges like FJ Ibrahim, and everyone trying to keep the info flowing. These include bloggers, those sending regular mails with info, those writing petitions and those simply raising their voice.
All of you, all of us are a source of inspiration, pride and the reason hope remains alive.

Pakistani riot police stormed a private television channel’s offices and tear-gassed employees after its editors refused to stop broadcasting pictures of protests in Islamabad over moves to sack the country’s top judge.

Geo News Bureau Chief Hamid Mir said on television that police broke windows, scuffled with staff and released teargas in the office, as the hearing against Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary resumed in the nearby Supreme Court.

“They tried to drag me out,” Mir said. “They’re demanding a camera installed on the roof should be removed.”

The channel was able to broadcast live pictures of the helmeted police carrying shields and batons bursting into the channel’s building, and Geo vehicles parked outside were damaged.

Transmissions from the rooftop ended a short time later.

This is what Mr. Hmaid Mir told Indian TV channle CNN IBN live when Geo TV’s office was being attacked and one policeman was threatening him to put down the phone.
“Police entered our newsroom and started destroying computers, desks everything. They want us to stop our transmission. They are beating my colleagues. One policeman is standing in front of me right now and is threatening me, ordering me to hang up the phone.
We have been transmitting visuals of police beating women and children outside the Pakistan Supreme Court and Parliament so the police and the government are upset with us. They cut off our phone and Internet lines. The police is trying to arrest us.”

There is a saying in Hindi -” Vinashakale Viparit Buddhi”. ( One loses sense of right and wrong just before self-destruction). One wonders if Gen Mushrraf is going on the same path.

  39. MQ says:

The only damage done to any public property in today’s protest in Islamabad was done by the police when they stormed Geo’s office and broke its doors and windows without any apparent reason.

  40. March 16th, 2007 11:43 am

As others have already been reporting here, the TV studios of GEO TV were attacked by police today.

According to the GEO TV website:

Police entered in Geo News office building, shattered glasses and started shelling within office premises.

Large number of policemen entered in the office manhandled newsmen and other staff members of Geo News.

Policemen shoved senior journalist Hamid Mir. They baton-charged and injured several staff members. Policemen also damaged vehicles of Geo News.

Police officials also demanded closing camera coverage of protests in Islamabad.

Staff members offered resistance to police aggression to save the premises.

Information Minister Mohammad Ali Durrani rushed to Geo News office soon after incident.

While talking in a Geo News programme ‘Kamran Khan Ke Saath,’ Durrani termed the incident as ‘unnecessary.’

He said that the incident by the police force was totally irrational and vowed stern action against the Islamabad police.

Also, you may see a video report of this incident from IBN here.

The good think is that Geo is fighting back. Since Kamran Khan’s program is banned, they are now featuring him as their news correspondent. They are also showing more of what got them into trouble with the govt.

I understand that Musharraf appeared on Hamid Mir’s program and apologized to him personally.

What the heck was Punjab Police doing out of their jurisdiction in Islamabad attacking the Geo building. Could it be a way to let the Islamabad Police and other federal authorities off the hook regardng this attack? I am saying this because I just saw CNN’s coverage of this incidence, Hamid Mir was standing in front of the camera and reporting on the attack, his comments were translated and he said its the Punjab Police who are doing this and at one point the attackers also chanted slogans of Punjab Police Zindabad.

  46. March 16th, 2007 2:46 pm

The thing which was not mentioned by majority[I could figure out the reason] that in this invasion on GEO building, police misbehaved famous Geo lady producer Asima Chudhary and even pushed her and attacked on her. Same Police also misbehaved with daughter of ex ISI chief Gen.Hamid Gul and misbehaved with her infront of her father[shown on GEO]. I just saw on ARY that police was beating up a guy[Thudday exactly],took of his shirt and when he fall down then they kicked on his head as if they are kicking some dog.

This is being done by the person who was worshiped in past on same forum by many member and declared a person brave enough to support women, freedom etc etc. Now same anti-Mullah fraternity on this forum condeming Musharraf, coining childish terms “dur fittey” etc. Same people were not getting tired by singing praises of Musharraf, quoting iqbal, women members of this forum was making lengthy posts against zia, hudood ordinance and getting happy that their Messiah had given them new life. Now same anti-Mullah fratenity innocently cursing Mush as if they did nothing in past or database of this forum. what a hypocrisy. Though I am not surprised as I already knew that the dictator would just show his real face after fooling few people who started looking towards him with hope.

Oh between I just noticed that Adil Najam just added a seperate section IN CONTEXT in which he put videos of both Zia and Musharraf in same slot. What a painful scene that would be for anti-Mullah cabal who always claimed Thekedaar of liberalism, freedom and women rights activists in the name of SECULARISM. Maybe he is treating both in same manner, i don’t know but this section once again proved my point that Left hand side is equal to Right hand side. Equation proved!

Please do us all a favor and go hide in your basement for a day or two.

  48. BitterTruth says:

  49. March 16th, 2007 4:35 pm

Akif. Truth is bitter which you are unable to digest. Whatever I said, it could be witnessed on same forum. So don’t curse others for your gimmicks.

As far as your “unity” is concerned then its not different than “unity” of Bibi, nawaz and others politicians against Musharraf.

  50. March 16th, 2007 4:42 pm

Oh, BTW this is not irrelevent. I have always spok e against hypocrisy of Musharraf and his so called enlightmened and moderation and freedom of press but then at that time the anti cabal spent most of time cursing me or like wise and tried best to prove wrong. What you and me are experiencing today is not surprising at all. Atleast for me and as long as people like you keep supporting dictators like musharraf ,altaf etc then majority of nation would keep suffering due to ignorance of minority.

Since the topic is about freedom of speech so I hope ATP administration would think a bit before declaring my comments “irrelevent”[which is absoultely not] and put in moderation.

  51. Akif Nizam says:
    March 16th, 2007 5:15 pm

Adnan, congratulations ! you have managed to pull me into this irrelevant discussion. So I’ll force myself to make a statement but no more.

You’re right; you “have always spoken against” ….”moderation, enlightenment and the freedom of press.” You have always equated these value with Western servitude. If my memory serves me right, we have never discussed Musharraf directly on this forum. We have only argued over ideology and values and visions as they pertain to Pakistan.

The reason why this episode is especially painful for liberals is because we believe in these principles. We desperately wanted to believe that Musharraf means what he says because he was the only one saying those things. It’s not like there was a lot of choice.

The crowd that you placed on the other side of the “equation” as I, not only doesn’t believe in these principals, they are actually loathe to them. This is as unbalanced an equation as can be.

  52. March 16th, 2007 5:16 pm

It seems that Musharaff time is over!! he is making grave mistakes and then apologizing the same as it is done by outsiders. Though same is done by Police under Sherpao.

Point is who ordered police to do this. I am sure that man is not going to be exposed rather they are going to punish Policemen who were ordered to do so.

I think Musharaf party is over!! as “Masters” are searching for his replacement.

We desperately wanted to believe that Musharraf means what he says because he was the only one saying those thing

True. I know you are not lying here but then I also assume you are a person who would have experienced Zia’s martial law in past. Didn’t your education tell you that dictator always use such issues as a tool to keep them in power? if Zia used Religion then Musharraf also used Islam to keep himself in power. Both has no intrest with their “advertised” agenda. Since its our national duty that we don’t learn from our past, we repeat same mistakes again and again. If Zia used “Jihad” to grab more and more dollars then Mush used WAR ON TERROR and TALIBAN factors to fill his pockets. It was even mentioned a recent report after CJ removal that Mush kept lying US about taliban and terrrorism and kept demanding US to give more money. At that time religious people got excited and now liberal felt themselves in heaven after finding mushi their messiah. This is something which gives a laugh nothing else and then we curse medarassah people and declare them “illerate”. After all we have no other shelter to hide our own ignorance.

The attack on a major TV channel by the police is disturbing enough, but what is really frightening is that everyone in the government — the information minister, the interior minister, the chief minister of Punjab, prime minister and president — feigns ignorance of why it happened and who ordered it. The question is who is running this government?

The Supreme Judicial Council has put a ban on commenting on the events, and also reporting on SJC procedeeings. But this ban was not applicable to the government and its is most obedient servants. That’s why the big m durrani, and the black m arbab rahim, Sindh CM, could make derogatory remarks about the person of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).

The big m durrani is more vocal but less knowledgeable person like many other trashes gathered by musharraf to linger on his reign. Aitezaz Ahsan rightly said on a TV channel in front of millions that, durrani is “ignocent”, ignorent plus innocent. He is continuously herping on one thing “khudara”, don’t cry for only one judge (the CJ), also think for other 5 judges (the member of SJC), they also desreve the respect (who are showing disrespect to them?).

Anyway, coming to the point: this directive of SJC has made all TV anchors and presenters shaky and shiverring. They have been taking advice from the retired judges. All of them have given clear advice to the journalists. They have also said that, it is unconstitutional to gag the journalists.

Even then, our newsmen are quite afraid. Today they are not reporting about the Councils proceedings, but are saying that “we have restriction upon us imposed by SJC about reporting, so we can report on this issue.”

Why are they accepting the ban, the portion of which are ultra vires the constitution? Why do not they say that, “we do not accept the unconstitutional part of the directive”. Why are the showing such fear, when they are bearing the brunt of naked police aggression?

Will my friends, all here and every where except the men with “manners”, please encourage our journalists not accept the ban that is unconstitutional, and also tell the issuing authorities that, “you are crossing your limits in violating constitutions. “??

With all that has happened in the last week, if the government survives now, it will be very bad for the country. A lot of other things such as poor governance etc we are used to, but when a government tries to use police state tactics, then its further continuation becomes very dangerous.
It won’t be just a one off situation, if Musharraf gets away with it, he will be willing to do it again and again.

  74. MQ says:
    March 17th, 2007 11:44 pm

I think it is a no-win for the government. Let’s assume for a minute that the SJC declares the CJ not guilty. It will make Musharraf’s position untenable. And, a guilty verdict will have no credibility in the eyes of the people or for that matter in the eyes of the world after what has happened in the last 10 days.

    Dealing with dissent

One would have thought that going by the tumultuous events of Friday and the general response of the nation to them, on Saturday the police would have been ordered to be a little more circumspect in their dealing with those protesting the ‘suspension’ of the chief justice. On Saturday, the ‘action’, so to speak, seems to have shifted to Lahore, with dozens of lawyers arrested, manhandled and lathi-charged by the trigger-happy Punjab police. And while the chief justice’s lawyers are now claiming that the tight security cordon around him has been relaxed, it should be remembered that this has happened (pending independent corroboration) only after the Supreme Judicial Council made it clear on Friday that there were no restrictions on the movement of Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. As for Saturday’s actions by the police, they were mostly unprovoked again, this time beginning when lawyers were prevented by the police from going inside the premises of the LHC to attend an all-Pakistan convention organised by the Lahore High Court Bar Association. The police lathi-charged the lawyers and fired tear gas shells and this rash action eventually snow-balled into a full-fledged street battle between the unarmed lawyers and the Punjab police constabulary.

The question that one would like to ask is why cannot the government let the lawyers meet if they want, why cannot it be okay with people protesting whatever it is they wish to protest against, provided it is peaceful and does not disturb public order. Surely by now, it should have realised that an all-out confrontation with either the lawyers’ community or the media is going to be a futile if not downright negative exercise in that it will only serve to further exacerbate an already tense situation and that this heightening of tension will only damage the government’s own credibility and lower its image in the eyes of Pakistanis in general as well as the outside world. As for the attack on the office of The News and Geo TV on Friday, the government has reportedly suspended 14 policemen who allegedly took part in the raid. A judicial inquiry has been promised as well one can only hope that it succeeds in unearthing the real perpetrators of this naked assault on press and media freedom. Again, it is worth reiterating that it defies common sense and logic to believe that junior-level policemen on their own would attack and ransack the offices of a national newspaper and a news channel in the heart of Islamabad, a stone’s throw from the Parliament House, the Prime Minister’s Secretariat and the Presidency.

The best way forward for the government would be to allow peaceful forms of protest. As it has already said, the matter is now before the SJC and the directives of this body should be followed. One of them relates to the coverage of the SJC’s proceedings and of the hearing of the reference. Here, as directed by the SJC print and electronic media have reported only the press release detailing Friday’s proceedings. The government, and especially the electronic media regulator PEMRA, should not seek to unnecessarily extend this directive, as has been done so far, to order newspapers and TV channels not to cover the events and incidents arising out of Justice Iftikhar’s suspension and to desist from giving him any coverage.

Such a blanket prohibition impedes the people’s right to be informed on all matters related to the chief justice’s ‘suspension’ except of course those that are sub-judice, i.e. the contents of the reference against Justice Iftikhar and the proceedings of the SJC to examine it. Also, by prohibiting any coverage of the issue, a situation may well arise in which, because of absence of any information, rumours begin to gain currency and that only serves to destabilise things further. As a first step, the government should call off the police on the lawyers and permit them to exercise their democratic right to register a peaceful protest and this should be applicable for civil society in general. As has already been pointed out by some commentators, those at the helm of affairs should realise that the rise of the information age, characterised particularly by the coming of age of the country’s electronic media (and to some extent of the Internet, especially blogs and so on), has changed everything. Clamping down on the flow of information and on dissent is next to impossible and only counter-productive. Ban a TV channel and one will find the information on the Internet or on a blog, blackout a newspaper and get the story on a web forum. The dictum that the Internet is perhaps the biggest encourager of a democratic mindset (and certainly a facilitator of a level-playing field in terms of who controls and provides information) has never been as true as now in Pakistan’s case. Now only if the country’s polity was as democratic, with its head of state and head of government, both accountable solely to the people.

When a television station starts to actively create riots on the streets by becoming partial to the situation rather than remaining impartial, then bans are necessary. The media has to report the news and leave the commenting to the general public. With freedom of the press, comes responsibility to not incite chaotic behavior in that country. Clearly GEO TV went beyond that and disregarded this duty of the media. In every country that has the so called “freedom of the press”, the government institutions still maintain the right to censor anti-patriotic media. This has been done throughtout histories of many nations, including the United States.

A Valuable comment from Shazia Awan on the issue of 50% in PTCL:
We all are thank full to Miss Marvi Mamon and Mr. Muhammad Barjees Tahir for taking a right decision but I request them to please also make arrangements for implementations of the decision of the committee. PTCL Management is such a rigid, blind and def to listen the voice of poor people. Is there any body to take action or to check how much heavy emoluments are being paid to contractual staff. Almost all (ten) SEVPs are being enjoying Rs.2 million per month. Every SEVP is being provided a company vehicle 1800 CC with 400 litter petrol although their residences are only 3 to 4 KM for from their offices. Every EVP equal to BPS-21 is being paid round about 1 million per month and there are at least 25 EVPS are working. Every General Manager (BPS-20) is being paid 350000 per month and at least more than one hundred General Managers are working in PTCL. All these are contractual employees.
All regular employees of BPS-17 and 18 are being paid Rs.25000 to 30000 and the Government increase is conditional with their performance. Who the hell is the decision maker to issue such bull-shit circulars that due to inflation salary increase is conditional with performance base. Is inflation incomes with performance base?. Is a person who gave his golden time to PTCL and near to retirement is deprived from his basic human right because his performance is not such like the fresh graduate. Is this justice?. Mr. SEVP HR always live young and his performance is good.
One more thing who is responsible for 2 billion losses occurs due to protest through out the country. who is responsible for that if some responsible persons are being sacked from the top level management then these losses would be recovered. no not and never. Our corporate client is shifting towards other operators, who is responsible for that.
Ever any person think that the people sacked from other telecom companies or bank crupt companies or default companies these people are appointed in PTCL at top.

We nearly all have started believing that they all are same especially after sugar scandal and flood of 2010, the two major parties are making enormous amount of money in local currency as well as in foreign currencies, they are daringly looting us knowing that the nation can’t get away from trio of us 2 major political parties, they have made agreement that they will rule the country turn by turn like they did after Zia. And the 3rd ruling party is army, we all have seen army as well in last 4 coups, created political parties of lootairas and handing over the government to them, they did nothing for the betterment of people of Pakistan. Now about Zulfiqar Mirza’s accusation after 4 years of his party in government, telling America is planning to break Pakistan and MQM is supporting America and then Altaf Hussain bringing other parties in subversive activities is all planned drama, fool nation to save PPP for their next term which will come after 6 years if not Asif then Bilawal will be either President or PM, MQM will be least on risk as they will be coalition partner in the government of either political party. Mirza in his every press conference or TV interview categorically cleaning Asif Zardari and PPP any kind of wrong activity which the world is saying, and accusation is on America for breaking country, and MQM is with America. No anchor so far asked Mirza that America is already in 2 Islamic countries Iraq and Afghanistan, America is totally controlling these two countries now Mr Mirza tell us in how many states America has divided these two countries, whereas fractions within both these countries do exist, besides between these two countries there is Iran with which America is having long tussel going on, then why not Iran why Pakistan, Pakistan’s every government since 1958 associated with America, its every newly elected government’s head’s priority is to pay a visit to America to begin his duty according to instructions received from America.
I beg to all TV Cannels and their anchors please stop flaming up these baseless things.
    Shahid L. Khan
