The news is too fresh, murky on the details, and still developing, but as Adnan Ahmed has just pointed out on the comments section of another post, Pakistan walked out of — and therefore possibly forfeited — the 4th Cricket Test against England at the Oval, in a dramatic turn of events. Then, it was announced that Pakistan will take the field… but just as the crowd begins to cheer, the umpires decide they will not come out if the Pakistan team does. Meanwhile the light keeps deteriorating. No matter how this ends, this will be a drama to remember.

More and developing details are available here. Best place to stay informed on this is CrickInfo.Com, from where the photograph above is are linked. (Updated after original posting).

Dickey Bird calls the current controversy bigger than BodyLine…. So is Hairline the controversy of our times :)

the press conference and its contents are so anti-climatic, came home from work and the press conference was on and my heart was sinking in anticipation of bad news against pakistan but Hair’s email is bizzare. his boss, ex-south african cricker Dave Richardson that this is “typical Darrel” is mind boggling. is dave saying that Darell Hair’s mental unstability is a personality attribute well known and accepted within the ICC. So Hair is typical no-non-sense everything-by-the-book typical Darell…whereas does this leave Inzi. I read that Inzi slept peacefully after the incident. I salute him really… contrast this with Bob Wolmer who contemplated resignation…way to go Bob…when the chips are down, one can really see what mettle you are made off… inzi and other guys come from humble back-grounds and they have shown us their inner strength… inzi’s actual action that we are overlooking is the fact that he did not take his team out of the ground when the ball was changed… that was the captain’s decision… once he returned to the dressing room at tea-time, the group dynamics & herd mentality hijacked inzi’s sound judgement

And things keep getting more bizzare… following up on Naveed’s email:

Darrell Hair offered to resign as a member of the ICC’s Elite Umpires Panel in return for a payment of $500,000, Malcolm Speed, the ICC chief executive, told a press conference near Lord’s…. In the letter, Hair asked for “a one-off payment to compensate for the loss of future earnings and retainer payments over the next four years, which I believe would have been the best years I have to offer ICC and world umpiring.” Speed said that he was shocked and “thought it was a silly letter.” He continued: “This issue has been marked by a series of unfortunate and entirely avoidable overreactions,” adding that he believed that Hair did not have any malicious intent.

The cat is out of the bag folks. So much for principals. As of now Hair’s asking price is $500,000 which after reading the chain of emails posted on cricinfo is negotiable and can be revised. This is so far off the standards set by Dickie Bird and even Shepherd.
