ADDENDUM, March 18, 2007: Inzamam announces retirement from ODIs

March 17 and March 18, 2007 proved to be tumultous for Pakistani cricket. At first Pakistan lost to Ireland in a World Cup match which saw Pakistan unqualified for the next round. Next the coach of Pakistan cricket team since 2004, Bob Wolmer had a sad demise in his hotel room and then Inzamam-ul-Haq announced his retirement from the ODIs. The detailed news of Inzamam’s retirement is quoted by Adil Najam below in the comments section. As far as topic of the above post is concerned, it looks like Inzamam’s career will stop after playing 378 ODIs in total.

    As of March 17, 2007

    Tendulkar 382 ODIs
    Jayasuria 379
    Inzamam 377

looks like inzamam will play one more match and then this race of most experienced cricketer will continue between Tendulkar and Jayasuria

Past two days have seen too much sad action as far as Pak cricket is concerned. Latest being the retirement of Inzamam from ODIs.

While current debacle of the team has brought the wrath to fall on Inzamam, his career as whole remains an illustrious one for Pak. he is still the most prolific run scorer for Pak in ODIs.

I agree with Samdani that for now he should be left alone. I am very sure that defeat in WC and Woolmer’s sad demise must alsready be too depressing for the players.

Personally i won’t be surprised, if in future the team loses few more matches then we could see President or PM requesting Inzamam to rethink his decision. This won’t be first time in histor either. Afridi and Javed Miandad both retired from ODIs in the past and the came out of the retirement.

  3. Samdani says:

I think the decision by Inzimam is the right one. Let us now, please leave him alone. Its a sad day, let us not make this any more angry than it needs to be.

Inzimam announces his retirement from One Day Cricket. According to BBC:

Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has announced his retirement from one-day international cricket.
The 37-year-old, who made his debut in 1991, will play his 378th and final match when Pakistan complete their campaign against Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

It has been a turbulent few days for the captain, with the team’s failure to qualify for the Super Eight phase and the tragic death of coach Bob Woolmer. “I talked with my father on the phone and decided to retire,” Inzamam said. Inzamam, who is playing in his fifth World Cup, has endured a wretched series of results at the tournament in recent times.

After the 2003 tournament in South Africa when he scored only 19 runs in six innings, he was dismissed for only a single against minnows Ireland on Saturday, which led to his team’s shock three-wicket defeat. The burly Pakistan figurehead, speaking on Saturday night before the death of Woolmer, described that loss, and the team’s elimination from the tournament, as “the worst day of my cricketing career”.

It was in his first World Cup, aged only 21, that he enjoyed one of his finest moments in international cricket. Batting at number five in a team captained by Imran Khan, his 42 from 35 balls helped Pakistan defeat Graham Gooch’s England in the final in Melbourne. He has scored 11,702 ODI runs at an average of 39.53, with 10 centuries and a remarkable 83 fifties.
