There was a time when PanAm was the biggest and most fascinating international airline in the world. That has changed quite some time back. And so, it seems, has Pakistan. The subject of this fascinating promotional documentary made by PanAm in the 1960s.

Given the Japanese narration, it seems that PanAm was trying to lure Japanese tourists to Pakistan. Right there, an interesting notion.

I do know that Karachi was a major stop in PanAm’s long-haul flights and I assume this is related to that. Although it does seem that the documentary is focusing on much more than just Karachi. So much in the video is so different from what now is. But so much is also so much the same.

I find the footage absolutely fascinating at so many different levels, even though I cannot understand the narration. Maybe a Japanese speaking reader can help us get a gist of what is being said?

It is fascinating…thanks for posting. Has TDCP made anything similar in recent years? If not, shame on them. It is sad to see that there was–and still is–so much promise in this nation, but its enemies within and without just won’t let it prosper.

It was same peaceful just before 9/11 also I myself has a tourist group on the day on 9/11 and we were travelling Pakistan for 2 weeks and had reached Sukkur when we heard the news of 9/11.

The things are still not as bad as portrayed in the Pakistani TV channels. I had a group in September and they had a great time, we went to Peshawar and walked in Kissa Khawani bazaar for two hours.

The only problems in my humble opinion is nepotism and promotion of Punjab. All the bad things of Karachi started when the people at the high commands started to shift their attention from Karachi to Lahore, In the quest of making Lahore an international city. Now the whole country has become a model of what the guys wanted to make in Karachi.

I dont care about the rest….i just want bikinis back in Karachi….just to piss of mullahs….ummmm on the 2nd thought..i dont think that will upset mullahs, I bet there will be more mullah staring at beauties than non-mullahs….mullahs love to stare with one one figure up their nose…must be quite an experience for them…when they stare they are totally unaware of their surrounding.

Unnecessary adverse comment about East Pakistan. It was one Pakistan then and many bengalis lived in Karachi and so do still now.
