Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).
I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.

I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

Here are the key leaders in the ranking:

1. University of Agriculture (UAF), Faisalabad
2. NWFP University of Agriculture , Peshawar
3. University of Arid Agriculture, Rawalpindi
4. Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam

3. Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering, Swabi
4. University of Engg. & Technology (UET), Lahore
5. Mehran University of Engg. & Technology (MUET), Jamshoro
6. University of Engg. & Technology (UET), Taxila

    @Zulfiqar Siddiqi

I think this ranking was just a very premature effort on the part of HEC under Atta-ur-Rehman to make some headlines and to present Rehman as the architect of modern universities in Pakistan. Not all the universities were covered. Not many factors could have been considered. And the subsequent lists were never published. It seems that Rehman has other priorities now, one of them seems to be saving his own jobs.

It was interesting to know about the expansion of universities
in Pakistan. However, I am wondering if someone could elaborate as to how the rating of an educational institution
is determined. Is it based on factors like, quality of professors,
talent of the students, number of books in the library, opportunities for research, location of the institution, finance
available, opportunities of finding jobs for students after graduation, etc. etc. How many points are assigned to each factor of these factors. Thanks.

“i think many of us dont know about that uni and it only specializes in masers. the only reson of its 1st position that i can figure out is that “faujiun ki uni hai”. and dats wat one of my friends in islamabad says. nobody even knows it there! let alone the whole of pakistan.”

So unfortunate for my dear friend, i think he lives in darkness!
The only engineering university from Pakistan in the top 500 slot of Times Higher Educations Supplement world ranking.

    See for Pakistan.

I would also like to dispell the argument of ‘kothis based institutes’. NUST has distributed campuses in the Twin cities, risalpur and karachi, most of them well established and huge yet the most under-developed campus (National institute of information technology) NIIT is has the greatest fame abroad. It has high tech labs funded by microsoft, IBM etc. Several projects have been done with collaboration of international mentors. Moreover, NIIT (www.niit.edu.pk)has the highest share in the research publications of NUST, followed by the college of electrical and mechanical engineering (www.ceme.edu.pk).

I being a NUSTian hate the military culture of NUST yet the institution in itself is great as far as academics is concerned!

    aoa all pakis!
i think this is a perfect ranking except the number 1 uni in engineering. i think many of us dont know about that uni and it only specializes in masers. the only reson of its 1st position that i can figure out is that “faujiun ki uni hai”. and dats wat one of my friends in islamabad says. nobody even knows it there! let alone the whole of pakistan.
and about punjba group of colleges, i think they simply suck….sorry but this is the fact. they are no more than money making machines for amir mehmood and nothing else. no research, no campus, no distinctions…..why should they be even considered for such a high level ranking that involves the whole of pakistan? what message will one be giving to international community who reads this ranking and then actually finds out these shity “kothis turned colleges”?
btw i was myself a part of punjab group of colleges by studying in Resource Academia so don’t challenge my information.
