Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receivng four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).
I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.

I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should’ve been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of studetns etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

“NUST doesn’t have that many PhDs yet it is quite high on the ranking. It receives a dispropotionate amount of funds from the military, ministry of defence and ministry of finance. Other universities should be provided similar amount of funding”

NUST might not have enough PhDs yet the no still exceeds many other universities. Disproportionate amount of funds. Well actually NUST so far is using military institutes, the facilities already exist for the training of the militiary engineers and doctors. Otherwise the amount of resources available to UET are not quite less. They have government funding in literally all the areas. NUST constituent colleges on the other hand even don’t have proper transport facilities etc.

Fundings from ministry of defence. Well most of the funding from the defence related institutes are utilized for R&D purposes. Many ppl might not be aware of the fact that several ongoing military projects of defence related institutes like KRL, PMO etc have useful contributions from NUST undergradutate and graduate level researchers. For instance the first UAV of Pakistan will be having its auto pilot system developed by students of EME college. This is just a simple example. There are several ongoing projects which have funding in millions of rupees.

This all funding is bestowed onto NUST primarily because of its military basis, yeah true, secrecy is prime issue. Students are discouraged to publish their research in military related projects. The second reason being that the R&D engineers of NUST have gained the trust of these defence related organisations only throught their consistent performance. I think other universities can make sincere efforts in this regard too except for lamenting the disprortionate availability of funds.

NUST doesn’t have that many PhDs yet it is quite high on the ranking. It receives a dispropotionate amount of funds from the military, ministry of defence and ministry of finance. Other universities should be provided similar amount of funding.

PIEAS was originally just the educational arm of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. Thus it received a lot of funding and man power from PAEC. No wonder its also high on the list.

Other universities are competing on an un-level playing field. Thus ranking of universities must also take into account these factors.

What gives an edge to PIEAS over the rest is the no of Phd faculty and the no of publications. Uet certainly lags behind in both!

UET Lahore should be at top in Engineering universities considering the Faculty, Services provided to community as compared to the dues & funding in which they are managing everything. The Cream of nation goes here and have a survey of top professional organizations. MOST OF THE TOP POSITIONS ARE HELD BY UETIANS……

UETIANS ARE SERVING THE NATION IN REAL SENSE….
