Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.
I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

yes i agree with you that NUST is the only prestigious university of pakistan and i can easily compare its status with PIEAS and i think NUST should be at the top of engineering universities….
i am very shocked when i saw that there is no name of BAHRIA univeristy(ISLAMABAD CAMPUS) in HEC ranking.where as BAHRIA is one of the best insituition in managment as well as enng.
In preparation for a panel discussion at the upcoming NED Alumni convention 2008 in Hartford, CT, I have a new post on my blog about the HEC university rankings controversy in Pakistan. Here’s a brief summary of it:
Higher Education Commission in Pakistan released its first and only ranking of universities in Pakistan in October 2006. Prior to this HEC effort, there had been no formal attempts by any public or private group to establish a set of criteria and judge Pakistani institutions of higher learning. While this is a laudable first step in the right direction, it is clearly not the be all and end all of the universities’ ranking process in Pakistan. It can be significantly improved. As expected, there is a genuine controversy swirling in Pakistan on the HEC ranking methodology and the results. This ongoing controversy may be the reason why the HEC skipped the annual rankings in 2007. The main criticism of the HEC assessment criteria is the emphasis of quantity over quality that unduly favors and rewards institutions with large graduate programs. Another key criticism is the lack of peer and employer assessments of the universities and their alumni.

NUST has been ranked 376 in the recently released Times Higher Education-QS (THE-QS) World University Rankings (WUR).

NUST is the only Pakistani university in the top 500 list. QS ranking is a prestige world university rankings and securing a position in top 500 is a great achievement for NUST.
I think the culture of working along with uni study should come to Pakistan as well. That is the only way to pay higher fees to get good education. Our students are used to living off their parent’s money till their MS which is unthinkable in the West, except of course for the well to do.
