Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).

I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.

I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

    @ ANAM..

It depends on the options you’ve got. But i personally think that if you are looking for a good job placement after you’ve completed your studies you should hope to do your masters from abroad. Do your undergraduate from any normal university here and then go abroad for masters, that would make sure you’ll in line with the graduates of LUMS and IBA for that matter :)

In response to Zulfiqar’s response regarding NIMS and LSE.

The addmission criteria is surely a bases of the quality of students you have in a university but i strongly disagree with the policies of NIMS and i dont personally think that the 108 that would ultimately get through would be quality as compared to world standards.

Their entrance test was totally pathetic, asking things which could be attempted by anyone who is good at cramming things. There is no provision for personal creativity and assessment of students on their personal talents and abilities. They just have a bookish formula of taking in students and nothing else. In Bussiness Administration specifically universities should look for the people who would turn out to be good proffesional managers and contribute something to the market that is exclusive. Do you expect a student who is just used to the matriculation system of cramming things and copying it word by word in the exam and any addition or subtraction would lead to deduction of marks. This might work for doctors or engineers but for bussiness management this is can not.

Also, i fear that NIMS also has that conventional method of teaching. As BBA/BSC require constant updates on courses, etc our conventional teachers and universities go by the dogmatic way of teaching. This could be done in BBA as well.

Last but not the least, universities are known for their facilities, their faculit and student intake. 108 students in a batch is not a good enough no. to be ranked amongst the top universities of the country. The more the students the higher number of quality graduates pass out.

I might not be right, but thats whats my personal opinion and on this basis i’ve based my decision to go for LSE.

The University Of LAHORE should be here in top list. Because this is the only university from pakistan who come in world’s top 500 Universities ” THES-QS World University ranking 2006″.
It is recognised by the Pakistan Engineering Council.
It is recognised by the pakistan Medical and Dental Council.
It is recognised by the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan.

In May 2007 The University Of LAHORE given highest HEC ranking.
Ranked among the Top 500 Universities of the World (Times London & QS).
I think this is the No 1 University Of Pakistan.
The University has also a new city campus in which it teaches the programs of COMMERCE & ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE and It is attached with the University Of LONDON.
