A business in Malir, Saudabad (Karachi) is selling working Computers by weight. The ad guarantees Pentium IV microprocessor PCs available in 10 or 15 kilogram versions.

The first line of the ad reads:

save thousands of rupees. Buy computers by weight

Main text in red reads:

Pentium IV Computers (available) at Rupees 399 [approx. US$6] per kilogram only

Does it show abundance of PC hardware in Pakistan? or is the country fast becoming a dumping ground for old PCs from rest of the world.

I couldn’t really make up my mind whether this is a nice thing or not. On one side people get affordable PCs, but on the other side, obviously not all of the dumped hardware gets recycled for building these. What happens to the left overs?

Ok, lets consider this is a good thing for 1 minute, what would people do after actually buying one? 90% of the internet infrastructure in PK is below 15kbps. (You can’t expect a person who buys this to be able to afford high-speed broadband). This means 90% of the young generation uses it for chatting/ email purposes. Other than that, these computers are a source of wasted nights for students.

Not really useful unless the communication infrastructure for the internet and a healthy environment in pursuing IT as a profession is available. At the moment the buyers are only buying these for entertainment purposes. Either as a Movie player, Music player, Games console or chatting :)

    Dear pakistani blogger,
We at enewss are trying to bridge Indian bloggers. However,
we also recently made slight modification to bring Pakistani bloggers on board such that there is bloggers to bloggers contact between two countries. Whatever this may sound to you like, this is one of the efforts to air bloggers views across borders. This will give one more oppurtunity to see and understand each other well and see how the new generation think of each other.
If you do believe in this effort, I would like you to signup at http://www.enewss.com and submit your blog rss/atom feed to ‘Pakistani blog’ category.

This way Indian bloggers can also read the Pakistani bloggers view and comment on each other blogs and see their perspectives.
Once we reach sufficient number of Pakistani bloggers we will show cause the category on main page.

    Best regards
    sri

I’ve seen a news report where solder lead (Pb) out of computer PCBs is melted, collected and then resold in scrap markets of Pak. Similarly there must be a gold extraction process from gold plated IC and connector pins. The news report I saw was from Dawn of last year and showed children going through heaps of computer PCBs and salvaging whatever could be resold.
