As I am writing these lines, International Test Cricket has returned to Pakistan after a gap of 16 months. Today, Pakistan is playing against Sri Lanka at National Stadium, Karachi and as of now Sri Lanka has won the toss and is batting first. Latest score is Sri Lanka 120/2. I’ll continue to update the score in Comments section of this post but for now how about we take a look at some statistics of Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Test Matches.

So far Pakistan and Sri Lanka have played 32 test matches. Pakistan has won 15 (46.88%) and Sri Lanka has won 7 (21.88%) matches. 10 (31.25%) matches have been drawn.

After giving back-breaking HSc exams in 1988, a friend of mine and I decided to take a tour of Northern Pakistan. A relaxing week of mountain trekking in the ‘galliat’ was our high point. We were on our way back to Karachi when ‘lage haathoN’ (while at it) we decided to add Sialkot to our itinerary.

The Coaster:

On the fateful morning we reached lobby of a Murree Road (now called Benazir Bhutto road) hotel which had the bus ‘adda’ (terminal) of Sialkot bound coasters. Our scheduled departure from Rawalpindi was at 8:00 a.m. but even by 8:30 a.m. there was no bus in sight. I went to the reservation clerk to inquire and he replied:

‘ji bus ka patta toot gaya hai. driver welding karaane le gaya hai’ (A belt has broken in the bus. Driver has taken it to get it welded)

Hyderabad: How Clean is Our Drinking Water?

I had never been overly optimistic about cleanliness of our drinking water sources, but following two photos hit too close to reality. Pakistan’s 6th largest and Sindh’s 2nd largest city, Hyderabad draws its drinking water from Phuleli Canal (official spellings – Fuleli). The photos in this post show protest by an NGO in Hyderabad against pollution in the Phuleli canal.

Click on the photo above to see a larger image. If you look at the photos and language of posters these guys are holding, they show corpse of a dead horse and a dead dog in water. One poster shows a hill of city’s solid waste getting mixed in the water.

According to a study the amount of nitrogen and phosphorous added to Phuleli canal from sewage water were calculated to be 316.2 tons/month and 85.3 tons/month respectively.
