Owais Mughal

Lately no news coming out of Pakistan seem to be good news. This afternoon I started writing about Benazir’s return in lighter words focusing on hilarious statements coming out of our politicians on her return and then this horrific news of scores of people dead started coming in. My lighter mood vanished totally and now I am left wihout words and more questions like, Why? Who? what now? etc.

The headline news on CNN reads as follows right now:

An explosion near the motorcade of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto killed at least 110 people and injured 200 more, officials say. Bhutto, returning after years in exile, reportedly was unhurt.

While we are glad that she remained safe, our sincere prayers are with those innocents who lost their lives.

140 dead. A very heavy price for the so called democracy being thrust on us by America just so they can keep on fighting the war on terror. Benazir has failed twice and will fail again as she is incompetent and corrupt. Her voter base is illitrate and being taken for a ride by their feudal masters. Saw her interview today, political bickering has started and things will only get worse. Only silver lining is the pakistani nation’s resilience in such circumstances which is also wearing thin fast. I hate to say it but we are in for a rough ride. Everyone seems to be blaming everyone else and no one seems to be in control. I love Pakistan and saddened to see all this voilence and deaths

Raza, sorry if we’ve sounded indecent at a moment when we should seriously contemplate about trying to make our future safe but all that is being outpoured here is a result of the total frustration we’re getting out of the turmoil we’re finding our nation now for quite some time. Things are getting complicated with each passing day and we aren’t finding a way to find ourselves free from the tangle.

Now this one is great Ali Saheb -
it is good for the “US agent” that her peaceful followers (and well there are hundreds and thousands of them..alas) should be killed??

Let us focus on this tragedy and think of solutions where no party, or group suffers this fate - whether PPP or any other political grouping..

Raza Rumi: I completely agree with you. Reading these comments have made a depressing day even worse.

Good and warm welcome to an agent of USA. She was chosen by US administration to work along Mush so to make Pakistan a fully Puppet state. (Already we are) Soon all LOTAS and JAYALAS will join hand togather to suck more blood from People of Pakistan.

Mush has already talked about hes corruption a number of time. But if you are involve in small crime the hands of law are waiting for you. But if did a corruption of billion of rupees you get a green signal along a Ministry.

May be Pakistan dont have much time left for its existance.

If some of the reactions here are indicative of Pakistan’s educated people then God help us all.

Some of the comments are not just insensitive but utterly distasteful. In particular the one by the fake Asif Ali Zardari - is this the way to write about a woman, howsoever you may hate her. Pathetic!

Hundreds of innocent, hapless people (without access to the internet to rant) are dead -

this is the time to CONDEMN and say NO to this trend rather than name calling and harping on myopic political biases.

It was heartwrenching to watch the coverage on Geo. And it continues to pain me when I think even for a second about the gravity of what occurred. I am so, so sorry for all those who died and their families.

I’m also sorry for all those for whom such happenings have become “business as usual.” Those of us who have become desensitized.

Our people remind me of children who’ve been subjected to domestic abuse all their lives. Their threshold for pain increases with every lashing, to the point where a cry becomes a barely audible whimper. And like abused children they’re predisposed to mistrust and cunning… wasting no time to exploit an opportunity or play blame-games in response to situations that would have rendered an “ordinary” child to crouch in shame and shock.

The normalization of misery and our growing desensitization is as tragic as what happened.

Ironically, what Benazir’s dad ZAB once said has an ironic ring of truth to it: “What is built on hypocrisy and deceit must finally crumble.”

We seem to be living in denial for too long.
No people could stand by and watch
    In silence and indifference
As a generation of serfs and innocent fall
For pir, waderas and the generals!
Call it a sham! or whatever, but it is a shame!

Jhoot ehsaas ki qandeel ko booja deta hai….
