Geo TV Pakistan Shutting DownNews is that GEO Network is closing down. I hope the news is a false alarm, but I am told that this has been announced on Geo TV itself. An email making the rounds from someone at GEO itself reads:

At this moment we here at Geo are extremely SAD as Geo network is forced to shut down due to Govt pressure on UAE our base country.
Insha Allah we will fight. We are proud that the management of Jang Group never made compromise and prefer to fight till death.

I would rather wait to hear more details and to see reaction to this from the government, from the people of Pakistan and also the rest of the world before I comment in detail. But my first reaction is, yet again, one of disgust. The things that we coudl have been most proud of in recent years and months - an assertive judiciary, a free media - are being snatched away one by one. I hope it turns out not to be so. But if so, then who next?

Original Post (Nov. 4, 2007):
The emergency declared by Gen. Pervez Musharraf yesterday was not surprising. But that does not make it any less disturbing. Amongst the many unspeakable actions that have resulted from this is a clampdown on the media, especially the electronic news media. In response, GEO News has made the audio stream of its transmissions available on line.

GEO has become extremely biased. It seems they are out to settle scores.
Be it electronic or print media, their news items cannot be believed at a glimpse - a lot of it is simple a lie. Also, they are spreading despondency all over our country.
If they are shutdown, I will certainly not be disappointed.

Geo News to shut down with in the next 48 hours most probably at 3:00 am on the 14th of June 2008 & they surely deserve to be; as their criticisms knew no boundaries. Each talk show comments indecently & irrelevantly to the political stature of the President of Pakistan; even his name isn’t taken with any respect in any of their shows, this is just 1 reason why I quit watching their channel & I believe there are many like me!!! Long live Pakistan & Musharraf

I just cannot understand this. On the one hand the govt is making Shahid Masood the Chairman of PTV and on the other hand the govt has told GEO thru UAE authorities to stop broadcasting his show. What is this about? Who is saying what to whom?

@Geo TV channels and ohter likes must be closely watched,
criticized and their license be suspended on any violations
of Pemra’s conditions. Their segments on Nazaria-e-Pakistan
is to be watched permanently, their serials & dramas are
vulgar, cheap, charbbah, very kitch immitation, insult to
national language, one of the Jamshedpuri (indian) D.P
revealed, on Nadia Khan show the worst, claiming “Pindi”
situated some where near “Bhatindah”!! goodness gracious, and Nadia kept on nodding to such idiocy. Anyone saying two nations are the same even today, should be declared insane and a security risk for Pakistan.

I believe GEO NEWS comes back on air today in Pakistan.

Does that mean that all the news channels that were closed are now back?

I read all the above comments , what i think is that, these comments were passed by your people (staff), because you people were crossing your limits, specially Kamran, Shahid, Hamid mir etc. So President is right an GEO is wrong, but Jang is good.
    waiting for your reply.
