Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.
I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

it is pretty good to see NED on number 10.i personally visited two times NED in past,in short i am not satisfied from their courses and final year projects.
Faisal K. Qureshi has a fake BA degree from Karachi University.

I do think more than 10 yrs down the lane, I would like to pay tribute to N.E.D students who made solar car on their own, using their skill in those years when no one was talking about solar energy.
Never heard anything ‘solar’ made after that…sad..
I agree that the standard of institute are not what is should be but I feel pretty let down, you work so hard to get into the ‘best’ institute that the city, (Karachi) in my case , offers and then to make a list and not mention it at all. Like other grad of Dow, I can speak volumes of what is wrong: but it comes down to basics: no money to invest in the college, too many students in a class, teaching environment is very controlled, the best professors take too little class , and people are hung up on their titles that they carry. Good teachers however always shine!
After getting trained abroad, my teachers here with ‘titles’ are humble , approachable and most importantly very knowledgeable who are keen to impart their knowledge and appreciate an individuals hard work.
Also, there is a strong feed back system, if a teacher has not taught / doesn’t know enough: every student get a chance to give feedback …excellent check and balance system. You just have to keep yourself updated.
We should have healthy competitiveness regarding academics amongst universities to help us improve and grow. And no politics in academic institutes.
Case report, research, writing articles are all unheard of! They (dow) has the best lot but during my time didn’t know what to do with its students!
