Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).

I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.

I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

  1. I was somewhat surprised by these rankings as well. NED was the big surprise and then I was also surprised to learn that FAST Islamabad campus was included in the rankings above the Lahore one. As far as my understanding goes, the Lahore campus is the best one for the university.

Moreover, I found the ranking system somewhat weird. Look at the ranking criteria they underlined under the heading of “studentâ€

their alumni are already professors at harvard, johns hopkins, yale etc

some of these alumni have come back to aku. imagine if they are good enough to be professors at harvard, hopkins etc how good they will be.

all this when aku started producing grads less than 20 years ago. its only a matter of time when one of their alumni wins a nobel prize etc and aku starts shwoing on the world map!

Well ranking the universities is a good thing that HEC has started but the criteria should be made more diverse. I am a student of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute’s Mechanical Engg. department that is probably the best ME department in whole of Pakistan. As far as GIKI’s standards are concerned they are undoubtedly the highest in Pakistan, a fact that is even recognized and admired by the people and students that come from different other universities in Pakistan. We have a faculty that is truly international with Phds not only from Pakistan but also from UK, France, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan etc. The ranking of the universities has been rejected by GIKI’s rector Dr. Abdullah Sadiq (S.I, Abdus Salam ICTP Laureate). He was also the previous rector of PIEAS. GIKI maintains that the criteria under which the universities were judged is completely biased as private and public sector universities are judged under the same category. GIKI is a no-profit institute unlike NUST or PIEAS which recieve massive funding by the government and the Armed forces. GIKI is not on the governments funding list and finances itself yet it got higher points in finance management by HEC as compared to other universities. Also GIKI is an undergraduate institute whereas it is ranked with post graduate institutes that counted for the reduction in points for GIKI under the categories of no. of Phds produced every year etc. Our academic standards are recognized by HEC itself as a 2 gpa holder from GIKI is equivalent to 60% whereas for other universities it is 2.5 equivalent to 60%. In short HEC should make the sysytem more elaborate by including categories as student societies and activities etc.
