Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).

I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.

I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

I m a student of national university of science and technology.i have read some comments abt hec ranking and
also abt NUST.it is thought that NUST has a large amount of funds.I think it is not true.bcoz if we compare any type of facilities tht the student of other public sector universiteis have.Like tansport facility accomodation facility etc.every public sector university student can get these facilities at very low expenses.another important thing is exam system of nust.there is relative grading system.and after each semester aproximately 10% students from the lower end r relegated or withdrawl due to its tough exam system.due to this studies at nust is very tough as caompared to any other institution.so u can not say tht the ranking is bad.

hi,i want to take admission in bcs in comsats islamabad campus.I am only interested in it for various reasons but i have a few doubts.

    1..
what kind of electives are taught there in the theird and final year?do they match with uet lahore’s course?

    2..
Is it possible to transfer credit hours from ciit isd. to some british university/institute.

    3..
what kind of time table do they have?

I have a few friends who are studying at uet taxila(software eng) they told me that its in the evening shift and they don’t give any summer holidays and its a continous
period of 4 years which is really hard.(imagine going to university from islamabad everyday @ 10:30 in morning and returning @ 8:00 in evening)so in islamabd i am only interested in comsats.

please guide me.send me mail at

  3. ofcourse these are all my opinions and those which i got from my friends.
no hard feelings to any one’s alma mater.
    peace!

  4. 7 years ago around 20-25 pre-engineering batch mates in saudia left for higher studies, some went to NUST, some to FAST, some to NED, most to UET(Lahore). Although there were many more students who went to other places as well but im mentioning this small sample is because what ive come to know, NED is the worst among atleast the four mentioned, they do hire the best students but they dont produce the best engineers. Besides the definition of best is also controversial in pakistan intermediate board system. NED has no research facilities, faculty is lacking and for a long time they didnt have enough PhDs and most faculty were NED grads.
NEDians survived because they were the ‘best’ students. (again the def sustains) who helped themselves out. And ofcourse being the only public engineering university in khi worth going, many students who coudnt afford private univs. came along.

NUST, started off really well, infact still is a fantastic place to study but I have heard so many instances where NUST has a strong bias against civilian students even when they bear most of the fee. From Risalpur to PNEC in khi, its the same old story. Infact in khi, they used NED’s faculty. This states the sorry state of our top ranked univs. too.

there were around 5 of us who came to FAST, two in khi, two in lhr, 1 in isb. Things were going well in all three but when management changed in khi, they ruined it, when i applied, there were above 4000 candidates for 150 seats in karachi, last year i came to know that there were only 700 candidates for 500 seats!!! So much for attracting top students. and believe me, when i came, FAST had passed its peak time and was on a steady decline. Now, only lahore is worth going but with the constant increase in fee, people r choosing LUMS for obvious reasons.

UET Lahore i find to b a gym among public engineering univs. Except for the Mechanical Department which is and has been quite notorious for under achievement, their faculty, facilities all are worth mentioning.

I’d also like to add, that SSUET for a short period of around 5 years produced the best IT pros in Pakistan outclassing FASTians and KU students. even though they were not the highest in merit when entering, SSUET made them the best at graduation. This is what i call a good university.
But now i guess, its the old days again, what comes in, comes out the same…
