Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).
I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.
I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

From the above comments, it is clear that these ranking are confusing and have no solid basis. To compare Pakistani universities with ones in the US serves no useful purpose except lower the morale of Pakistani students and create discord among alumni of various universities. Pakistan is relatively poor country and has to put her resources where we get the maximum benefits.
There are two types of universities: the teaching schools and the research institutions.
Pakistani need is mainly for teaching where received knowledge is mastered. These students go into work environment and keep on learning the application of their knowledge. This the most productive part of educational system. It would be desirable to rank teaching schools so that they can improve imparting of knowledge to the students in most efficient manner.
The research type institution should be compared among themselves. Research is most subsidized activity the world over. There are a few areas where Pakistan should put some resources. These include agriculture, communication and computing technologies. These areas have the potential of absorbing a lot of surplus labor available in Pakistan. The defense expenditure would continue to provide resources for some of these.
It is a sorry state of affairs that there is no mention of millions of kids who never get to get any education. There is your root cause of low expectations for all educational institutions.
HI.Dear can anyone tell me that i`ve interested in BBA,so 4m where should i do. I`m 4m FAisalabad.. PLZ plz guide me.
i dont agree with the rankings
I am very dissapointed that NED has ranked number ten. Because no. of students registered from that university is low. But it is not a criteria of ranking. The ranking criteria depends upon the type of education and criteria of teaching. The criteria of teaching of NED university is better than the other university. The students who passed out from that university have better knowledge than other universities. The engineers of that university is famous all over the world because of above reasons.
i thnk insitute not best but stdnts are best becouse institute only provide atm. if students wants to get high scor otherwis imposible.
