Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).

I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.

I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

    and i hope once we means KIET will count among top universities/institutes . further i appreciate this the system of ranking it,s remarkable and terrific

    @Waseem Ijaz

    I fully agree with you that FAST is much better than NUST.

  3. waseem ijaz says:

    well its nice to know Pakistan has started the ranking system it wil increase the competition among universities as well as their education level too

    but its sad to knowFAST universitie is not in 1st 3 although i have studied in FAST n NUST both and i prefered FAST over NUST because of thier teaching standards n staff.

    NTS is no objective measure of the worth of the student. I have taken it twice and also have feed back from other guys who took the exam. The questions are copied as such from Barron’s GRE preperation guide. If some one has done that particular exercise from Barron’s that is asked in the NTS, he/she is lucky and gets a high score as compared to the one who failed to do that particular exercise.

    The idea of GRE is totally different. Here each time the questions asked are different because a team of experts prepares them and they are not to be found in the Barron’s book. So its not just about whether you have gone through a particular exercise in Barron’s or not but how much you have prepared for that. Since no questions asked in GRE can be called really intelligent questions, except the new Analytical Writing questions, so it measures more how much effort you have put in rather than how intelligent you are.

    I think in order to improve the NTS, HEC must appoint a team of very capable professors who should prepare the questions, not from Barron’s but from their own minds. I wonder what if ETS gets to know about NTS and files a suite against it, being the violation of copyright act.

    I agree witht he NED Crowd that they deserve a better ranking. The ranking that universirty has Achieved is because of its quite different policies than other Engineering Universities. Few of them that i know are :

    1 – Selection is purely based on Intermediate results. Candidate taking 40 marks in admission test has the same level as the one who takes 100 marks. The game is won by the guy who has a better score in intermediate. everyone knows, Intermediate Boards can be influnced.
    MUET and its affiliate in Nawabshah are surely not better than NED when it comes to Student Quality. But just look at this, There Entrance tests are conducated by IBA and now by NTS. The test results actually decide the fate. if a student have been hit bad by Board results, then he has a chance to improve in these results. Same applies to students declared bright by Education Board, if they are really good then they will get good marks in test.

    2 – The Qouta system in NED is based on Education Boards accross the Country. thus, Candidates with karachi based Intermediate have better chances to get in. This closes doors to students willing to get admission at NED from rest of the country.

    3 – Being a MUETAlumna, I can compare Infrastrcuture of the both the universities and My observations are NED needs to improve when it comes to buildings, Equipment availability, Use of Current Resources and some permanent Faculty.

    I have attended several workshops at NED and I see it as a better Engineering University in Pakistan.
