Here is a rather gruesome ad from the Punjab Anti-Narcotics Force, warning prospective pilgrims going for Hajj to Saudi Arabia of the dangers of drug trafficking.

The painted bill board ad makes the point, rather graphically and quite clearly that anyone caught bringing drugs into Saudi Arabia will face death. One wonders, however, if that point is being made a little more graphically than necessary.

The wording on the billboard (seemingly quite large and on an outdoor public location) says:

Don’t unknowingly invite death.
By taking someone’s else luggage or unnecessary foreign or local medications do not put your own life at risk.
Taking narcotics or addictive elements to Saudi Arabia will result in a certain death penalty.
Anti-Narcotics Force (Punjab).

How, I wonder, does a parent explain to a child who sees this billboard why the Arab-looking man is beheading the Pakistani-looking man with such gusto.

One wonders who it is that really gives Muslims a ‘bad name’? The message for the prospective drug smuggler to Saudi Arabia is quite clear. But, what is the message for the rest of us? And the rest of the world?

    I wonder why people are so worked up about Saudi Arabia on this site called All Things PAKISTAN. I am sure there are Saudi sites that discuss Saudi Arabia. Especially given the other post right now about ATPs six months, should we not be worrying about what happens in Pakistan and leave Saudi Arabia to Saudis!

    Mr. Baber

    Do not forget what Mr. Jack Straw said about veil…. and he is a Briton.

    I do not think that Muslims have relegious freedom in US and UK. The above two are just examples…. infact there are a lot of incidents showing hatred towards Muslims in the West.

    Any how this is a useless debate.

  3. Baber my friend, in Pakistan we do have access to Internet and we can read what Jack Straw says about Hijab. We can also know how muslim girls are being harrased by locals brits for that Hijab issue. YES our relatives DO live in UK and US!

    Kindly stop considering us members of some remote village where some stupid Vadera is considered credible than anyone else and people trust him blindly. Better keep things honest rather twisting them in favor of your statments.

    If freedom of speech means abusing Musharraf or anyone then it happens in Pakistan. Come Karachi, my office is just opposite to Karachi Press Club and everyone is free to say anything over there but the real freedom is that oponents have full freedom to give their views against a certain issue. Recent Bajor is the finest example of violation of freedom when journalists were not allowed to visit the site. The govts doesn’t censor news now, they rather Manage it and this is why a new term was coiined up as “Managed Journalism”.

    Speaking of US’ freedom of speech, following two links says something else.

    American style of freedom-I

    American style of freedom-II

    Now I would like to know that you produce some example of SAudia or Pakistan where such thing happened?

    Offcourse we in Pakistan do know so called patriot law to spy Americans. Thank God such thing doesn’t happen in Pakistan or Saudia. I know you guys live over there and clean roads,English language, electronic gadgets have made you excited enough that you just paint everything with a single brush. Good for you but not for everyone.

    not even a single law in islam is against the progression of life an world!it actually is the way to achieve success!stop mingling modernisation with islam as islams the most modern logical religion that led the european renassiance!islam is sterotyped as being harsh an the comments i have heard made me ponder that people actually have bought the idea!
    No one commented on the poster thought just brought ISLAM/SAUDIA juss like when we talk abt WOMAN theres PARDAH/ISLAM question.make sure when u comment think wat u saying! capital punishments in islam are logical!eye fer an eye!simple rule to curb problem!
    MQ::::
    SAUDIA isnt the muslim doctrine it breaks islamic law it self by way of KINGDOM!if they have implemented the law one shud say its right coz it is wether ajmi or arabi forget it paki or indian drugs ur doomed to be thrown to gallows!dun rationalise saudi society with islam that if one is wrong others too!
    AYESHA::::
    wahabi sect! in saudia is a practical approach i am a sunni but i appreciate their simplicity in the approach!its not wahabi religion its a understanddin of islam and the law is execute a drug traficker even in shia sect!
    If saudia has drugs that doesnt mean that capital punishemnt shud be lifted even here in USA they give lethal injection Gitmo’s Abu ghraibs talk abt it too!

    now abt poster ill say a poor thought but it imprints something in everones eyes that its death so people will be “cautioned” if the guy has saudi attire they juss showin that like in KSA its death here too!but it cud have been better…judt dun roll islam into everything that u dun understad!

  5. First of All it’s absurd to compare Saudi Arabia with America. The status of Saudia or Makkah/Madina for muslim world is NOT different than status of Vatican for a sect of Christians. Now It would be intresting to learn from our educated american and british desis that what they know about vatican society.
