UPDATE:

India won the TwentyTwenty final in a thriller, after setting Pakistan 158 to win and then bowling Pakistan out (with three balls to spare) for 152. IK Pathan from India was names Man of the Match for very tidy bowling (3/16 from 4 overs) while Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi was named Man of the Series.

ORIGINAL POST:
I have resisted writing about the Twenty20 Cricket Tournament in South Africa till now. But now I can resist no more. All is set for a thriller final game against India.

What more could one ask for… well, actually, one could ask for Pakistan’s TwentyTwenty winning streak to continue into the Final game against India in Johannesburg on Monday!

Pakistan is on a roll. And this is no fluke. The victories against Australia and Sri Lanka were brilliant and breezing past New Zealand in the semi-final today proved that this is not just a lucky streak.

The young team under a young captain and a new coach seems to have finally found its stride. And it is about time…

Much of our cricket coverage this last year has been depressing. Umpire controversies, a disastrous World Cup Exit, death of a coach, players misbehaving, and more. So, this good news is very welcome. It is all the more welcome because other news these days is much less than welcome.

Pakistan India friendship, cheering cricket fan

India, too, has had a spectacular T20 tournament. In fact, the most memorable moments of the tournament till now were the 6 sixes in an over by Yuvraj against England.

That the game between India and Pakistan in the T20 tournament had ended in a tie will make the anticipation about the final even more nail-biting.

Neither team goes in as favorites. Both go in on a roll. Its should be one great game!

Chandra, I was responding to Mr.Shahid who was needlessly singing praises of so called Indian secularism by imagining that India== Indian team only. I also see ShriShant making cross on his chest after every achievement and Bhajji kissing taveez he wears all the time so saying Indian team doesn’t have “faith” in something is ridiculous as Amit BhattaCharya of Times Of India tried to say in his article.

When Ireland defeated us in WC’07 matches on St.Patrick’s Day, the Irish captain mentioned it while interviewed to the host. No one made an issue of it so why create a fuss about Shoaib? he made a mistake , an unintentional mistake that’s it!. If the matched played on 25th Dec and Shoaib had congratulated Christians of Pakistan then no one was going to criticize it. If you want to criticize Malik, criticize his lame decisions in the match when he sent Akmal up while he plays well in lower middle order position. On the other hand, Dhoni trapped Pakistani players well, the way Malik, yunus and afridi were trapped was awesome. The other important thnig is that unlike Dravid and Ganguly, dhoni was very very calm and Indian team is lucky to get such a calm captain. I hope dhoni would continue this calmness in coming series between Pakistan and India on Indian soil.

When will get matured enough to be happy that afterall an South Asia team won be it India/Pakistan/Bangladesh or Sri Lanka. This reflects our narrow mindset. If europe can move towards co-operation and Unification why then should we still think in terms of religion and politoical boundries. So for me a great match, we rammed Aussis and English and South Africans, and finally a South Asia Team won..with a wonderful display of cricket…..great! Celebrate!!

Hi, I just discovered your blog. It is really wonderful. I wish we had a similar one-stop destination for “All Things Indian”. I have been browsing the site for hours and my favorite cricket post is this: http://pakistaniat.com/2006/10/26/cricket-beards/
Keep up the good work. And everyone, please chill down.

Yes, I think he made a mistake by reffering to religion. It was probably an innocent mistake (and something that our Indian friends are typically making a little too much of) but it was a mistake nonetheless. We Pakistanis do tend to bring religious invocations into everything rather unnecessarily and this was clearly an example of how it can send the wrong meaning and wrong message. I hope the lesson everyone gets is to keep religion OUT of sports… certainly in the comments from players and captains and also in comments from armchair politicos trying to score points on blogs!

    Mr Adnan
Who told you the condition of muslims in INDIA. WHAT ABOUT THE MINORITIES IN PAKISTAN? Accept the fact dear and only then you can progress. Your captain has made a mistake. Don’t drag religion into it. Religion is a personal issue. One does not choose religion he or she is born into. I would have taken PAKISTAN’s side if they would have played with any other country other than INDIA. Why dont you people accept the fact that we are all INDIANS FIRST with different religious beliefs.
