To compete with the grandeur of Abul Haul (The Sphinx) in Egypt, Karachi has come up with its own version. Should we call it Abul Hathi?

Currently there is some development work going on in front of Safari Park in Karachi. While the road pavement has been dug out, this elephant statue in front of the park has been given temporary support until work is completed. Note a 4-conduit pipe has also been placed under the trunk of abul hathi for support.

This is certainly a good measure by Karachi government. I understand the reason why so many people here are against this kind of beautification project. However, you need to understand that apart from access to basic needs of life such as food, water, shelter etc., one also needs to feel good about the environment you live in. If the area you live in is not beautiful, abundant supply of basic needs will not make you happy and healthy. It is a psychological factor that most of us don’t understand. I would be more concerned about graffiti and bird poop on this elephant than I’d be about how Karachi got the funds to secure this kind of project.

@ Roxio, I have heard about the Disney project near Karachi but I have no idea what stage it is in or if it still moving forward or not. However, any such facility is not run on public funds. These would be private investments and will bring in thousands of jobs. Those thousands or people will in turn keep thousands more employed. This is a cycle that funds itself. There is no use of public funds in this cycle. It will only bring financial freedom to people of Karachi as long as we can get more people to visit this place and keep the terrorists out. I may be wrong and government may be investing in this project but the benefits provided by keeping thousands employeed will far exceed the amount invested.

This is ridiculous amount of money and for what? So that a few wealthy group can enjoy Disneyland Pakistan? This is ridiculous.

The money should be used to improve structure of the city.

300 crores can be used wisely to improve roads, water system, built few schools and similar projects which can easily create some thousands of jobs.

It’s no rocket science but the mayor wants Karachi to be the next Dubai .. I guess a Disneyland would achieve that goal.

As if the Rs.22 crore fountain wasn’t enough, the world’s ‘second best mayor’ is showing keen interest in building a “Pakistani Disneyland” near Karachi costing Rs.300 crore.

This will be a colossal waste of funds.Readers should start sending emails to the mayor discouraging him from wasting valuable funds on useless projects.
Instead he should concentrate on providing clean drinking water and an efficient public transport system for Karachi.
We don’t need parks and fountains in Karachi.

Did they paint the elephant white ? I cannot believe MQM is wasting city funds making images of Ganesha around Karachi. I grew up during the Army occupation of Karachi from 1992-99 and I saw innocent MQM workers mutilated to death by feudal government agencies for a cause which remains to be expounded. Altaf Kalteen does not cease to remind everyone that his brother was killed by Benazir. However amongst others killed in fake encounters in Karachi without even crocodile tears from Altaf were

    1. Sikandar Ali, great grandson of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah by Jamshed Quarters police

    2. Imran Hasrat Mohani, great grandson of Maulana Hasrat Mohani, leader of the independence,Pakistan and swadeshi movements. ( Imran was an MQM worker and his mother Raissa is still an MQM worker).

    3. Olympian Hanif Khan’s brother by Liaquatabad police to nae but a few?

Why doesn’t Altaf dedicate a memorial on the pattern of St Augustine’s ‘City of Joy’ bearing an inscription naming all the deaths that he has caused to people of all ethnic groups in Karachi?
