Adil Najam

The Supreme Court has spoken. And spoken loudly. The NRO, they say, is null and void. What they do not say – and should not, since it is not in their mandate – is what should happen now to all that was unfolded as a result of the NRO. That is for politics to decide.

So, we thought in this latest ATP Poll we would ask you, our readers, what yo think should happen.

It was a little difficult to come up with what the options are so we based these on the comments on our recent NRO post. Do please tell us which of these options you would want and why. Do also feel welcome to add other options in the comments section; but don’t let that keep you from voting on these ones.

I am not sure what grounds Mr Zahid has in mind while framing his comments. He is entitled to his opinion but you cannot rewrite history through rhetoric and loyalty to a party or individual.Emotionalism has dearly cost us.Remmember country comes first.Individuals and parties come much later. The stability of a country does not revolve around insignificant persons but the society and the system. Our society is up and system is in place. We need honest individuals.

Everybody is against corruption but i was alarmed when i read the available details of the order.

The judges have proved themselves to be ardent Zia loyalists by reviving to the constitutional amendments brought by him.

i do not like AAZ but these actions would result in him gaining sympathy of the civil society and the educated people of pakistan. People want judiciary to be independent and nonpartisan.

Also i do not understand how the details of the cases against AAZ have any relevance to the soundness of the NRO. And if the law was such an abomination then why did the court asked parliament to vote on it. Do these people think that their games are not apparent to the progressive people of pakistan.

Adil, i did not vote on the options available because i think (filmi dialogue)
this court is out of order
they should repent their sins and declare Bhutto’s assassination as judicial murder
they should investigate the ojri camp incident
they should investigate the formation of the iji
they should investigate the assests of ALL the politicians and top military brass (and thier family) since zia’s era.
Question the person who framed all these famous cases against PPP leadership
then come talk about (il)legitimacy of NRO

The decision was wrong. It should be overturned.

And pray share with us who will overturn the Supreme Court decision? (Where is Sultan Musharraf when you need him?)

Frankly, I think those who are accused and hold office should stay. And try to develop zamir by looking in the eyes of honest, hard working people of Pakistan. If you send them home, how will they get someone to look in their eyes and tell them unspoken words of “you have no shame”?

It used to be that the file would come down and the lower levels knew this was being done wrong. But they had their jobs to keep and did what was being ordered.

Now, not only the subordinates know they are being led by a know criminal, they also know they do not need to obey an illegal order. That is priceless.

Prosecuting people in power is a new experience and it should be followed through.

The question will be how shameless are the people and how many showers do they take to wash their own lack of ‘zamir’.

It is no reflection on honest, hard working and decent people of Pakistan who are in scores of millions.

  4. HarOON says:

Very happy to see that no one is supporting a military govt

  5. DARWEESH says:

In my earlier comments on this blog, I had indicated that ultimately Judiciary shall be asked to run the govt for a year or two, clean the political field from thoroughly corrupt politicains, bring in some rules for politciains to rule/run the country,s political affairs. Support from those who matter ie Armed Forces,Media and civil society shall be there.
Presently the politicains ,rulers as well as opposition both are in no mood to allow implementation of Supreme Court decsion in letter and spirit.
Pray for Pakistan, we are at real important juncture of our history — Will Pakistan remain a corrupt country in 21st century or become a real Islamic welfare state ?
