Adil Najam

Can you please grade for us the performance of the five power centers in Pakistan: the President, the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, the Chief of Army, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Media. The focus, once again, is on how you think they have performed in these. That is, NOT what you think of Mr. Zardari in general, but what you think of his performance as President.

Back in June 2009 we had asked our readers to grade the performance of those at the helm of powers in Pakistan. Then in September 2009 we had asked you to grade the performance of the Pakistan media. (Earlier in September 2006, you had also graded Gen. Musharraf). It is now time to do a followup and see what people think now, especially after recent political developments.

In this latest installment of ATP Polls we would like to find out how you grade the performance of those holding key offices in Pakistan: President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, Chief of Army Staff Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kiani, and Opposition Leader Nawaf Sharif. This time we have included the Media (as a whole and as an institution) since they also influence Pakistan’s power balance.

I know I am repeating myself (both in this post and from the previous one), and I also realize that at some level this appeal will be ignored, but do let me say again that the purpose of this exercise is not to see whether you like these people or not, it is to see what how you think they have been performing in the offices they now hold. It is perfectly possible to not particularly like someone but come to the conclusion that they are doing a decent job in what they have been assigned to do, or vice versa. So, please, even though this is just a fun exercise, use your vote justly.

Do also comment on how you think they have been performing, and what aspects of their performance influenced your vote.

I think that the 18th amendment has done much to turn the tables on the popularity of many people. Certainly I have much more respect now for Zardari and Gillani and also much less for Nawaz Sharif.

  2. ASAD says:

I think your adding the media to the list of power brokers is right and important
they are a new power player and as the votes rightly show, they are not doing a good job, even though they are making a lot of money in not doing a good job

  3. Oh, plz. dont tell us the new latest political model ‘Facebook Next PM of Pakistan’ !! and the one and only ‘Khan’ getting 3,010 votes in NA-55. Imran is great for charity, education and emotionalism except Politics ! Its game of Opportunity and Wisdom and Khan lacks, unfortunately, in both ! Even Shahbaz Sharif despite of his hardwork and flip flop policies of Nawaz Sharif is considered as ‘Failed’ in governing Punjab with Crime Rates , as directly prop. to poverty, at the highest. Gujrat Elections and NA-55 elections margins of opponets clearly depict what masses of Pak are thinking about PML-N ‘double’ policies and silence over scandals, poverty and other national issues

in conclusion, everyone is failing!! there should a be a poll on potential new leaders. …… we want them desperatly.

  5. Problem remains with PPP, as always, some of the best leaders like ZAB , workers like Dr.Israr Shah , Jiyalas like Jhangir Badar , diplomats like Hussain Haqqani and statemens and thinkers like Rabbani and Sardar Asif Ali but few top leadership corruption including Zardari in previous BB governmentsand recent Babar Awan , Jhakrani,Pervez Ashraf in RPPs, Naveed Qamar recent LPG , Khurshid Shah in EOBI, Sindh Government Plot Scandals ,Amin Fahim TCP etc made PPP a mark of shame as awhole including above mentioned true politicians who wanted to do something thats why Facebook Graph of Musharraf is rising day by day considering inflation, jobless masses and electricity shut-down.

People of Pakistan not even rejoiced 2% of the recent move of PM Gilani andParliment protecting each other interests , no internal elections and reduction in ministries after 3 years.Media is like unchained monster creating everything out of ‘nothing’ , shameless 30 30 minutes coverage of Shoaib-Sania while millions have lost jobs and are on the streets but these ‘Corporate Goons’ after Musharraf , considering them ‘ King Maker or Breaker’.

CJ Iftikhar got 57% vote in recent Gallup Survey while General Kiyani, undisputedly , holds the highest ranks , for his role in eliminating Khwarijs, polite, sensible General negociated well for his country at NATO Conference and in Washington. If situation remains same in the country, no doubt ,people of Pakistan would start thinking Kiyani as ‘ Saviour’ in current chaos and horrible electricity, corruption and poor governance crisis !
