Can you guess where in Pakistan was this building located and what was its purpose? Comparing the size of this building with the two airplanes in the frame, you can tell that it is simply not just an airplane hangar. Then what was it? Why was it built? What happened to it? Feel free to share your answers or guesses. We will provide answers in few days along with photo credits and references. Together we can trace the whole history that went behind this building’s construction.
I think the site of this hangar being in Karachi as listed by others is correct but is too big to be the current Isphani hangar.
This is a picture of the Kala Chapra hangar which was 1 of 3 in the world then built by the British for use by the R101 airships. It was constructed in the late 1920s however none ever took use of it.
Finally it was torn down during Ayub’s time by his orders in the 1960s.
Karachi – now known as Isphani hanger
looks air factory, may be kamra
This looks like the R101 Hangar built back in the 30s but never used because the airship crashed in Europe on its maiden voyage. I remember passing it frequently on the then Drigh Road in Karachi, but I don’t recall the name “Ispahani” attached to it. I think it was demolished some time in the 1960s.
Yup. This is the hanger at Karachi Airport. But its magnanimity when compared to the air-crafts in the foreground is due to the fact that Karachi Airport was first developed to be an Airship terminal in 1927. The picture given is the first shed developed for huge Airships.
I would love to read complete details; it would be an interesting post indeed.
