Adil Najam

This is absolutely hilarious; and in a thoughtful and thought-provoking way.

Even if you are one of those people who never click on these YouTube clips, make this one an exception. It is really worth a listen. Take my word for it.

‘Hum sab umeed say hain’ is clearly a leader amongst a new breed of television comedy skit shows - edgy, young, political, and irreverent (‘Four Man Show’ is another one). Its no ‘Fifty Fifty’ yet, because it can be erratic in quality, but its best stuff is as good as anything anywhere in this genre of political satire. And this song is amongst the best.Produced for its March 23 special show, this is a poignant and hard-hitting spoof on the all-time classic national song:

Aao bacho sair karaiN tum ko Pakistan ki
Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani laakhouN jaan ki

I was immediately taken by both the visuals and the words. Using young school kids to convey the satirical message is powerful, and the words cut deep and hit hard. Here are some examples:

On Punjab:
Yahan police aur Qaf-Leauge nay har leader ko ghaira hai
Dour dour tak thakh baithi hai siyasi bradraan ki
Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani lakhouN jaan ki

On Sindh:
Daikho yeh hai Sindh, yahaN Arbab kay danka bajta hai
Laikin yahaN pay Adar (Order) aur kisi ka chalta hai…
Yahan pay taqat daikhi hum nay dahi say zada paan ki
Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani lakhouN jaan ki

On Balochistan:
Paani hai na biji hai na hai hifazat jaan ki
Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani lakhouN jaan ki

On NWFP:
Yeh Sarhad hai iss may MMA ka kaafi zor hai
Mousiqi pay pabandi hai, bass Hasba Bill ka shor hai…
Yahan pay klashinkov bhi milti hai qeemat meiN naan ki
Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani lakhouN jaan ki

As the kids say at the end, Pakistani Zindabad! :-)

    Adil,

This is fairly funny satire as far as it goes but MajorSahib is right. This is incomplete satire at best and the kind that khakis have always been happy to allow on media as it perpetuates the image of the devious, corrupt politicians as the core of Pakistan’s problems. By contrast the fauji is above the fray and doing his duty (by his very absence from this dirty political scene).

I would like to see if you can pull up any examples of satire from these new shows on things like one-man military rule, Kargil, real estate scams, CJP’s dressing down in military uniform, Musharraf’s referendum, disappearance of people, ‘accidental’ killing of Bugti etc. Many of these are ripe topics for satire but don’t hold your breath to see many youtube videos lampooning the sacrosanct military-industrial complex. It is when you truly go after the sacred cows in Pakistan that the intelligence officials pay you a visit and you receive “media guidance”.

By all means let’s enjoy what is funny on Pakistani TV (thank God for small mercies) but let us not fool ourselves into believing that somehow this represents some advance in an ordinary Pakistani’s ability to make fun of the powerful.

Probably one of the few funny bits from the show. Otherwise the show is quite corny and annoying!…speaking of annoying, MajorSahib, can you please fix your keyboard, your great spelling skills are adding to your already annoying comments! Thanks

Bhupinder, your indian audience might not know as well but the amount of songs that India has copied from Pakistan (composition and even including exactly the same lyrics)are countless. The saddest thing is that most of the ‘famous’ musicians from india have credited them as their own creations.

    Cool satire :)!

For anyone who’s interested, here’s the old Indian song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dd4erRe4Sk

I am not sure about this “Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani lakhouN jaan ki” that we keep talking about in the context of creation of Pakistan. As far as I am aware these lakhouN qurbanian occurred *after* the creation of Pakistan, and creation of Pakistan would have no bearing on whether these lakhouN qurbanian took place or not. However it does sounds better if we say ‘we got Pakistan aft lakhouN qurbanian’ even if it is not historically correct.
