In an uncivilized turn of events, the chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Khan was manhandled at the Punjab University Campus today. He was later arrested by the police. A group of students kept him detained on the campus and later turned him over to the police. According to Dawn’s Report:

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf chairman Imran Khan was arrested from outside the Punjab University’s new campus on Wednesday after he had been manhandled and detained in the campus allegedly by activists of the Islami Jamiat Talaba. Imran Khan had gone to the university at the invitation of a joint action committee of students.

The visit had been approved by Qazi Hussain Ahmed, chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, to which the IJT is affiliated. On his arrival at the campus, the PTI chief was confronted reportedly by a group of IJT activists who kicked him around and punched him. They took him to a room in the Centre for High Energy Physics and detained him there for about 45 minutes.

This is an interesting (and sad) turn of events. Imran Khan‘s party and the mother party of IJT are both partners in APDM. Imran and Qazi have been seen together in many media photo shoots for the past year or so. Will today’s action by IJT guys will cause long term bad-blood between the two parties? It is left to be seen.

We strongly believe that inspite of political differences, no person deserves physical bashing and humiliation as was met out to Imran. Political differences should never be taken to such extreme where people use force to get their point across. It is wrong. Shame on those who manhandled him. I was recently reading an article on political bashing in the Wall Street Journal. It had a punch line which just kept resonating with me. It read:

Our politics suffer when passions overcome reason and vitriol becomes virtue.

Details on Imran‘s manhandling can be read here, here, here and here.

Thousands of students of PU have protested today against the shameful events of yesterday. Have never seen such large gathering of PU students in a while. They were condemning IJT and their disgusting behavior. Aaj tv, which is now back in Lahore thankfully, also showed the video and interviews of protesters. Aaj website has a story and pictures of protest which you can find here

I have been a student at IBA, PU and I know for a fact how unpopular IJT is at PU. I was glad to see that the protests actually started from IBA ;)

Some of my friends were their yesterday and they say if Khan was allowed to move freely in PU, he would have gathered a crowd of 15-20 thousand easily and that was unacceptable for some elements.

Anyone has video or pictures of the protest against IJT, please post here.

Imran Khan is not a hero. This is the the thing we must be absolutely clear. Being a famous sports personality does not mean that the person is a national hero.

He DID NOT win the world cup, it was the team who won the WC, for people short memory I urge to go back and see the video of the matches. and he created bad memories of actually mishandling careers of a lot of cricketers.

The nation must know who it regards as national heroes. Our national heroes are famous social workers, scientist and philanthropist.

We strongly condemn what has happened with Imran Khan in Punjab University, we can only sympathize and raise our voice with Khan. Jamiat’s action is a reflection of immorility and against the political and cultural norms. Imran has been kicked, thrown, beaten, pushed and handed over to Police by so called Islamist. Punjab university is not a property of JI or Jamiat, anyone has the right to visit the campus, why they are blaming General Musharaf to lift suspension of basic human rights (emergency). It is also worth while to note that Islam has provided us clear guidelines about treatment/handling for guests and visitor, which have been put aside by an Islamist party.

After the JI and Jamiat actions, I have serious doubts about opposition to stand united against all evils of present Governement.

While the law and order problems created by IJT are often cited as a lame justification for appointing army men as vice chancelers, the betrayal of Imran
Khan by IJT is a clear example showing the army’s tacit endorsement for Jamat-e-Islami’s thuggish student activities on various campusses.
    You can check

    here

It even gives an address for the IJT office in Lahore. Yet, our army government, which can impose a ban on TV channels and even attack the supreme court
to save Musharraf’s backside, never goes there and take any action against IJT for its disruptive role on campusses.
Obviously, IJT serves a very useful role for the military, as Imran Khan’s example shows very clearly.
