Following is something I wrote 20 years ago for Adamjee College‘s annual Magazine. Time flies guys! While going through my stuff today, I found the magazine and thought of sharing the article here. Pardon me if some of the write up appears too lame in 2008. Imagine that I was just a first year teenage student then. While some of the text may appear to be sarcasm, I am very proud of my college and I hope many of our readers will be able to relate to their college life in Pakistan.

I was able to find following two photos at flickr of Adamjee College’s main gate. This photos are courtesy of Zain Yoonas.

Qaisar Saheb, please share more of your memories when you get time. Iftikhar sb for Physics and Amanullah for Botany were there in 87-89 period too. Amanullah sb was actually the principal during my stay in college from 87-89

Bravo, you has a great potential, keep it up. By reading your article, my imagination goes back in 1977 / 1978 when I was the President of Student Union.

Those were the still best days at AGSC, the conditions around were not as poor as you had mention. The residential apartments were not there, the road was nice and clean. The college building was kept real clean and nice, Auditorium was making good money, during the day time we used to met different personalities from showbiz as they were doing their rehearsals for evening shows.

Dr. Mastoor tries to keep the discipline at its heights, I still remember Prof. Iftiqar from Physics department, he was our union incharge too. Prof. Amanullah was the head of Botany dept. There used to be only one female teacher in our college and that was Madam Shehnaz of English Department, she was great.

As Mujahid Ghazi mentioned, our student week was one of the best among Karachi colleges. The student week I hold as President was one of the best in my life, I had to work real hard for the preparation. The English and Urdu debate was very popular event in the city, In 1978 student week ends with the music competition in which famous Pop singer Alamgeer also performed.

There is lot to write, but next time.

    Old memoreies brought back.
I graduated from Adamjee College (inter-science pre-med) in 1983-84. I remember the large classrooms upstairs. Boring teachers mostly (some exceptions were: Sir Amanullah(Botany), Zology professor(I forgot the name…he was slim and wore thick glasses), Chemistry (Sir Mona Lisa…he always had a sweet smile on his face), and Urdu professor, Sir Rizvi (“Neend Us Ki Hai, Khayal Us Ka Hai, Ratain Uski….Teri Zulfain Jis Kay Kaandhay Per Paraishan Ho Gaeen”). I used to sing “Pak Serzameen Shadbad…” with two other students in morning assembly. I remember that the principal (Sir Mastoor) was very strict and if students uniform was not immeculate or shoes were not polished, they were sent back home. Library was full of outdated useless books. The students were the best of Karachi, very motivated to secure a seat in Dow Medical College…so they were “asocial” type and selfish at times. Despite that I had a few very good friends…Qazi Abdul Hadi (SMC), Mohd. Yousuf (DMC) and Tariq Shafi (DMC).
I remember Canteen too which did not offer much other than tea, cold drink and samosas…as much as I remember.
There was quite a bit of walk from Gurumandir bus stop (unofficial one at the turning near Hamdard Dawakhana and a bank at the corner) to the college.

No i don’t recall that particular debate contest but just by reading about it I can imagine how interesting it must’ve been. ‘bivi maa se afzal hai’ :) is a great topic for debate.

    D. Murtaza also taught us English Poetry and he was the editor of English section of Magazine in 88-89.

D Murtaza used to put extra effort on our English pronunciation. One day a very funny event happened. He spent almost 20 minutes fixing whole class’ pronunciation of the word ‘truth’. He tried all kinds of tricks; ‘touch your tongue to upper teeth and softly say the word t.r.u.t.h’ :) I think we all got it after repeating it atleast 50 times.

After D. Murtaza’s class was over, the very next class was of mathematics with Ahmed Saheb and he was teaching us the chapter of ‘logic’ with Truth Tables. You know Ahmed Saheb’s Urdu-mixed-English pronunciation. He used to say calculator as kaaalkooolator. Well, while teaching ‘Truth’ tables he completely destroyed the hardwork done by D. Murtaza just a class before him. Ahmed Saheb’s sentences went like this; ‘dekho aaj hum banaayen ge ‘TURRUTH Table’. tum bhi banaao ‘TURRUTH Table….aaj ka sabaq hai TURRUTH Table..’ and so on.

Whenever few Adamjeeans of my batch meet, we still laugh about this episode of ‘Truth’.
