The photo is from Hala, Sindh and it is an advertisement banner for an educational institute called ‘Benazir English Learning Center’. I think the school management has carefully chosen the name to get free marketing points. The name ‘Benazir’ literally means ‘unique / one of a kind’. The banner is in Sindhi. I’ll translate its readable contents below.

The banner reads as follows:

Memon Foundation Grammar School
United Memon Party, Hala

BENAZIR ENGLISH LEARNING CENTER

After successful completion of ‘First Group’, admissions are now open in ‘Second Group’.

Girls and Boys are taught at separate times.

In this regard, we have acquired services of the “Award Holder” teacher, Maqbool Ahmed Memon, M.A, MEd.

Duration of Short Course is 4 months.

Classes will start on Wednesday – October 8, 2008.

New Timings for Girls: From 5 p.m. to 6: 30 p.m.
New Timings for Boys: From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

You people can’t understand the love people have for her. You simply can’t understand. Think beyond the terms publicity, PPP, advertisement, cheap way…..Grow up.

Its all about branding. These days everything is named Benazir. Before that it was Quaid-i-Azam. Bhutto was popular when Benazir was alive. The lackey’s and toadies wanted to please her back then now they want to please scions of Benazir who have descended upon us and will be running the show unfortunately pretty soon. God save Pakistan from sycophants

It basically speaks of the lack of creativity and originality and overwhelming mediocrity in our society. There is “bhaiRh chaal”, copying and “taqleed” all around. I have heard of “motor way Latha”, “Geo Supari”,”Haseena Atom Bomb”, and “Macca electronics” to name a few. Just name things after whatever is popular these days. Issay kehtay hain makhi pay makhi marna.

An advertisement banner better serve its purpose.

Writing some of the words like “First Group”, “Second group”, “boys” and “girls” in English doesn’t look good for an advertisement. Write either in one language, or make a banner in two languages side by side. Like they use Spanish and English in some parts of the United States.

And, “Benazir” is a good name, but honestly, I’m tired of this name now.

I’m sure the school will accomplish more than benazir the “leader” ever did. Moreover, this current trend of naming everything, short of the hot water ‘hamams’ on Murree Road, after her has got to stop. Her death was unfortunate, but her achievements as PrimeMinister are already outnumbered by the number of buildings and roads names after her.
