While Pakistan is on a losing streak in SriLanka, a news-worthy milestone was reached by Abdul Razzaq as he took his 250th wicket in One Day Internationals (ODIs) today. He is now World’s 18th and Pakistan’s 5th bowler to achieve this milestone.

The top 10 list of Pakistani wicket takers in ODIs is below. The ranking in parenthesis is their World Ranking in terms of highest career wickets.

  • Wasim Akram (World #2) 502 wickets at 23.52 runs/wicket
  • Waqar Younis (World #3) 416 wickets at 23.84 runs/wicket
  • Saqlain Mushtaq (World #12) 288 wickets at 21.78 runs/wicket
  • Shahid Afridi (World #16) 259 wickets at 34.72 runs/wicket
  • Abdul Razzak (World #18) 250 wickets at 31.15 runs/wicket
  • Shoaib Akhtar (World #26) 223 wickets at 23.86 runs/wicket
  • Imran Khan (World #35) 182 wickets at 26.61 runs/wicket
  • Aaqib Javed (World #36) 182 wickets at 31.43 runs/wicket

      I agree with Owais’s comment.

Although Pakistan has essentially been humiliated on this tour, I think there is sufficient reason to be optimistic for the future. A year ago, it seemed like we were faced with a severe dearth of talent, with most fans counting on the return of Shoaib Akhtar, and Mohammed Asif. That no longer seems the case; Pakistan have recently discovered Mohammed Aamer, a resurgent Umar Gul, and a high-quality spinner in Saeed Ajmal. On the batting side, there is Fawad Alam, Umar Akmal, and of course the returnees Imran Nazir, and Abdul Razaq. No one can deny Mohammed Yousuf’s talent and skill, but for some reason his performances don’t propel Pakistan as much as they should.

I think the most critical tasks for them now are to get as much match practice as possible, and formulate team compositions based on solid strategies.

The calls to replace Younis Khan are completely unwarranted; anyone in his shoes would have fared worse. He seems to take the team’s performance very personally, which is a welcome change from Shoaib Malik’s disturbing nonchalance.

Razzaq had taken 200 ODI wickets atleast 2 years before Shahid Afridi but Shahid got past Razzaq in the past year as Razzaq basically sat out of National team for 2 years

Xafar, I don’t think T20 was a fluke. However, lots of individual technical deficiencies remain hidden in T20 format. A team can get by playing all kinds of unorthodox tricks in T20 and still manage to win as long as it produces runs or wickets.

In my thinking Pak’s current team lacks in temprament needed for 5-day tests and 50 overs matches. Everything is now going for wham-bam quick reward in cricket. This is evident that in recent times Pakistan’s Test cricket is producing results (whether win or loose) mostly in 4 days and sometimes even in 3 days. Very few matches get drawn. This trend is result of batsmen’s mindset of quick rewards. We need few solid batsmen ‘jo wicket pe jaa kar so jaayeN” :) :) Only M. Yousuf is capable of doing so in present team.

Glad for Razzak. But overall series makes one wonder if T20 was a fluke!!!!
