Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).

I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.

I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

HEC ranking is not a very good thing to go by. Based on my own experience I would recommend MAJU. They have a good learning environment and a good faculty. As for SZABIST and Riphah, they still have a long way to go before becoming institutions of substance. While Riphah is more concerned about making money, SZABIST Islamabad has never really picked up. Bahria is more of a “fauji” kind of institution and merit is not their first priority. As for FAST, its good, in fact quite good, specially in CS. But I can’t say if its good in BBA as well.

My suggestion would be to visit all the instituions and try to analyze the faculty, since institutions depend on the faculty they have. Some hi-fi institutions like NUST do not have the best faculty, while others like FAST have a relatively very good faculty.

I assume that people who have contributed above, in response to HEC university rankings, are educated, but unfortunately there comments indicate a total lack of objectivity expected from graduate of any discipline. One person commented that his university is best best because he saw talent there, another mentions his institution should be rated higher because its graduates are in the employ of renowned firms etc. What objective criteria is this? Talent is not enough, its application is the important factor. Also how many graduates from other institutions may be in in high quality employment? Just rooting for your own university is not enough – you must try and find find out what factors were taken into consideration in order for the rankings to be drawn-up. This is what all national and international educational set-ups do – subjectivity must be absence from any such enterprise. Unless you have had experience, both quantitative and qualitative, of all the different HEI’s included in the list then please refrain from giving such partisan views airing on an internation platform as this.
