Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).

I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.

I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

  1. I agree with Imran Niaz. UMT (previously known as ILM) has shown significant improvements in terms of its campus, extra-curricular activities, number of programs introduced and of course, the faculty which is considered the best faculty of business schools. Plus, it is directly competing with LUMS; in fact, many of our faculty members used were in LUMS before they joined UMT. And being an HR professional, I know that majority of UMT graduates are placed in top-notch companies. So I believe it should come in the top ten ranking.

  2. Imran Nazim says:

University of Management and Technology, Lahore, is also showing good results in the job and commercial market of Pakistan. UMT’s admission criteria is strict, but the degree awarding criteria is the MOST STRICTEST in PAKISTAN! Degree awarding for graduates is 2.75 CGPA and for Post-Grad, it’s 3.o CGPA. There are several students who leaves UMT just because they don’t fulfill the degree requirements. The faculty of Engineering in UMT is highly qualified and almost 35% of permenant faculty members are PhDs. Same is the Management faculty. The most speciality of PhD faculty members is that they are fully devoted to the University and pay full time for counselling. Labs are also well equipped. Specially after shifting to new campus at Johr Town, the University is now an attraction for students from all perspectives. I would say, from all aspects, ranking of UMT in Punjab should be at number 5, after LUMS, UET, FAST and PU.

  3. Fahad Azhar says:

Bahria University (BU) new upcoming institution improving very fastly and providing the quality of education to the students, there is no name in this context

  4. Zia Ahmed says:

Waqas Butt, you are right. I agree with you. But this is not only in NED, but also in all other govt universities.

Karachi university, Sindh university, Mehran university etc.. all are same. No difference.

May Allah bless our educational institutes. (Aamin)

  5. Waqas Butt says:

    AoA,
I m a student of NED …I think NED deserves to b on da bottom .. 90% of the teachers tht teach in NED are just pass outs who have no practical experience watsoever ………but everything doesnt go by books…THey have no equipment to show the students or even if they buy sum equipment then they publicize those equipments as show pieces ………i-e , nothing 4 da student …..practical workbooks which we have to buy are just like scrap ,even the teachers do not know wats written in them…… The teachers think tht as they are a government employee , no student can complain against them .but ,on their part ,they give marks only to selected students ,,, When i first came to Ned ,i came here with high hopes about my future but soon all my hopes were broken n now i m in final yr ….the administration just adds seats in every dept …….no dot care about the standard watsoever…..NED sucks ……but sayin this doesnt really comforts me , but i do not want to live in a fools paradise ………..
