Adil Najam

This is absolutely hilarious; and in a thoughtful and thought-provoking way.

Even if you are one of those people who never click on these YouTube clips, make this one an exception. It is really worth a listen. Take my word for it.

‘Hum sab umeed say hain’ is clearly a leader amongst a new breed of television comedy skit shows – edgy, young, political, and irreverent (‘Four Man Show’ is another one). Its no ‘Fifty Fifty’ yet, because it can be erratic in quality, but its best stuff is as good as anything anywhere in this genre of political satire. And this song is amongst the best.Produced for its March 23 special show, this is a poignant and hard-hitting spoof on the all-time classic national song:

Aao bacho sair karaiN tum ko Pakistan ki
Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani laakhouN jaan ki

I was immediately taken by both the visuals and the words. Using young school kids to convey the satirical message is powerful, and the words cut deep and hit hard. Here are some examples:

On Punjab:
Yahan police aur Qaf-Leauge nay har leader ko ghaira hai
Dour dour tak thakh baithi hai siyasi bradraan ki
Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani lakhouN jaan ki

On Sindh:
Daikho yeh hai Sindh, yahaN Arbab kay danka bajta hai
Laikin yahaN pay Adar (Order) aur kisi ka chalta hai…
Yahan pay taqat daikhi hum nay dahi say zada paan ki
Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani lakhouN jaan ki

On Balochistan:
Paani hai na biji hai na hai hifazat jaan ki
Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani lakhouN jaan ki

On NWFP:
Yeh Sarhad hai iss may MMA ka kaafi zor hai
Mousiqi pay pabandi hai, bass Hasba Bill ka shor hai…
Yahan pay klashinkov bhi milti hai qeemat meiN naan ki
Jiss ki khatir hum nay dee qurbani lakhouN jaan ki

As the kids say at the end, Pakistani Zindabad! :-)

I was not blaming Arjun for the history of military rule but simply pointing out a patronizing remark, which I felt was avoidable.

By the way, I would not have entered this argument if the Indians on this forum were not saying that they are trying to understand Pakistan and wonder why Pakistanis often get irritated with them. I am just trying to point out a part of the answer which might not have occured to them.

Of course, regardless of what others say, we do have to fix our internal mess, but how do any of my remarks mean anything to the contrary?

I can’t read Hamid Mir’s article since it is in Urdu, so not sure what exactly he is saying, but I don’t think our collective mistakes started in 1953 or with the agitation by the Mullahs. I am not a fan of the Mullahs, but I think they were only a very margenal nuisance in 1953, and in any case, we should have had our constitution ready well before 1953, so we need to look elsewhere to see where things started to go wrong.

Aqil “a life time under military dictaterships…â€

To our Indian friends, especially Arjun:
If you think Pakistanis can be rather sensative at times, have you thought of the reasons by putting yourselves in the shoes of Pakistanis? If you guys are really interested in learning about Pakistan, going through this exercise would certainly enhance your understanding, provided you try to answer this question by really placing yourselves in our situation and not from a perspective that comes most conveniently to you guys.

Also, I think Arjun could have restricted himself to saying that PMA is being over sensative if he felt that way, instead of going into that typical patronizing lecture along the lines of “perhaps a life time under military dictaterships….” I am sorry but I think one answer to your question about Pakistanis being over sensitive lies in this remark itself, if you make the effort to understand why and how.

Babar, and the rest, thanks. I meant it when I said I sometimes think I am not at all welcome here. Unfortunately, our education doesn’t allows us to learn much about either nation. I find this site really good in keeping abreast with whats happenning in Pakistan as well as learning about its past, but most importantly how Pakistanis themselves (atleast this small educated fraction) see the things. This last you just cannot get anywhere but on such Pakistani forums!

I realise that there are childish netizens and often overlook them. I guess I just did not like being told off for saying not a pip. Thankfully, readers here are rather civil, so my best chance of learning/interacting is here.

I really have no nationalistic claims on music. Even if Pink Floyd was a Pakistani band, I’d be in love with them :)

Dear Arjun, I agree that this whole discussion has turned silly and petty and that we shoudl move on. Agreed.

But do you really believe that on an Indian site people woudl just have laughed and moved on? Really?

…Iss saadgi pay aap ki qurban jaa-i-aye

I guess you don’t spend much time on YouTube or Indian hawk discussion boards!

I think both our countries are blessed with equal proportions of hawks whose comments tend to be far more inflamatory than anything here. I am not very proud of those Pakistanis, and I hope you are not of their Indian counterparts.

Luckily not too many of them fly over here to muddy things. Lets hope it stays that way!
