In an uncivilized turn of events, the chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Khan was manhandled at the Punjab University Campus today. He was later arrested by the police. A group of students kept him detained on the campus and later turned him over to the police. According to Dawn’s Report:

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf chairman Imran Khan was arrested from outside the Punjab University’s new campus on Wednesday after he had been manhandled and detained in the campus allegedly by activists of the Islami Jamiat Talaba. Imran Khan had gone to the university at the invitation of a joint action committee of students.

The visit had been approved by Qazi Hussain Ahmed, chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, to which the IJT is affiliated. On his arrival at the campus, the PTI chief was confronted reportedly by a group of IJT activists who kicked him around and punched him. They took him to a room in the Centre for High Energy Physics and detained him there for about 45 minutes.

This is an interesting (and sad) turn of events. Imran Khan‘s party and the mother party of IJT are both partners in APDM. Imran and Qazi have been seen together in many media photo shoots for the past year or so. Will today’s action by IJT guys will cause long term bad-blood between the two parties? It is left to be seen.

We strongly believe that inspite of political differences, no person deserves physical bashing and humiliation as was met out to Imran. Political differences should never be taken to such extreme where people use force to get their point across. It is wrong. Shame on those who manhandled him. I was recently reading an article on political bashing in the Wall Street Journal. It had a punch line which just kept resonating with me. It read:

Our politics suffer when passions overcome reason and vitriol becomes virtue.

Details on Imran‘s manhandling can be read here, here, here and here.

Although all of us has written aginst Jamiat and its involvement in Punjab University incident. We all ex-members of IJT were very disturbed on the PU incident and what Jamiat did on Nov 14….but we came to know the true picture afterwards.
Obviously the Punjab University(PU) incident certainly
is a black mark on the face of Islami Jamiat
    Talaba(IJT).
U have to agree that Jamiat is the oldest, largest &
most organized student party in Pakistan.Jamiat is an
idelogical party with a proper manifesto, organization
and approach. Jamiat has always rose to the occasion
whether it was movement aginst ayub khan , whether it
was movement aginst creation of bangladesh, from jihad
of afghanistan and to that of kashmir, Jamiat has
always been in the forefronts and has sacrificed lives
    for these noble causes
I wanted to say after the PU incident the whole print
and electronic media started to accuse Jamiat and
tarnished the image of IJT. I agree that it is not
wrong to write against Jamiat and I know Jamiat have
already paid a heavy price already on the PU incident.
All of you very rightly wrote aginst Jamiat. But my
point is Jamiat has accepted its mistake, Jamiat has
taken necessary arrangements and measures after the
incident, the PU IJT nazim is replaced , 17 arkan has
been suspended immediately, IJT has formally accepted
    its mistake.
Imran Khan himself has said it was agencies and not
    Jamiat reponsible….
What can IJT do more?yet print and electronic media is
accusing Jamiat! I want to ask you what should Jamiat
do more than confession and accept its mistake against
the manhandling of Imran Khan and media personnel.
I cannot recall any party accepting its mistake and apologizing………..

The rest is for u to decide

Crackdown on IJT men for harassing PU students

Lahore, Feb 06, 2008: The Punjab University (PU) administration on Tuesday night started a crackdown on the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) activists and expelled students, after receiving complaints against them about harassing students and officials.

Earlier, a report was received that the IJT activists, carrying guns, threatened hostel 4 guards on Monday. The IJT activists also warned the guards not to interfere in their affairs.

The PU official said the IJT activists had also harassed the hostel warden for bearing a strict attitude towards them.

Dr Mansoori said two of those activists were ‘illegal students’ and two had been expelled from the university. Those activists had been pressing the hostel officials to show ‘leniency’ towards them, he added.

    Jamiat and terrorism…what a surprise.

BZU expels nine: IJT nazim’s entry banned

Multan, Feb 04, 2008: The disciplinary committee of the Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) has expelled six students forever and three others for one year after a clash between student wings of two political parties left six students injured, a BZU spokesman said in press statement on Sunday.

The spokesman said the university had also banned the entry of Islami Jamiat Tulaba Nazim Luqman Nazir and another activist Bakht Khan to the university.

IJT activists beat six members of the People’s Students Federation (PSF) on Friday for speaking in support of a student who was beaten by them (IJT activists) for sitting with his sister at the university canteen.
