This picture depicts the simple pleasures of youth, but also a sad reality.

Here are children playing cricket in a class room of an abandoned school, in Sector 4 of Korangi, Karachi. This photo appeared in the daily Dawn of September 14, 2008.

The sad part is that this school was completed in April 2003 but has not seen regular classes yet. Newspaper reports say that that drug addicts have also made home in empty class rooms. May the drug addicts stay away from the kids!

Aamer, these days free lance photographers capture street photos or anything interesting and those are/can be used by news channels. I don’t know exactly about this photo but most likely the photographer found these children playing here. Then he positioned himself at bowling end and captured the photo.

    Harsh reality.

I wonder who the person is that took picture behind the bowler and how did it make its way to the press.@

What made me smile was the fact these children are also using a wicket keeper in their game. With a wall behind the batsman, wicket keeper can be better utilized somewhere else in the field.

Ok i have totally digressed from the topic of the post. wanted to bring attention to abandoned school building, but the simplicity and joy of the cricket game going on here is hard to ignore.

The photo also reminds me of our ‘choti cricket’ (small cricket) we used to play in our class room while waiting for teachers between periods. Broken Chairs or the Cylindrical Engineering Drawing holders were used as cricket bats. Table tennis balls were used. As soon as teacher appeared, everyone used to rush back to seats.

The school in above photo reminded me of those times except there is no teacher and no furniture in this photo
